I have a friend who owns one of those "quick change oil store" and over coffee today, he informed me that Pennzoil oil filters were now o. k. to run on the 2003 CTD's. I told him "no way", but he insisted that he had called the Pennz rep and was told it was approved by Cummins last month. I told him they would do anything to sell a filter. Would someone please inform me if this is true, and if it is, where can I go on the Web and get confirmation?

You'll need to find out who makes the filter for Pennzoil and go from there. If Fram makes it I'd run the other direction. Fleetgard LF3894 is all I'll use.

Dittos on what d90boy said. There's an oil filter comparison floating around out there that compares many different oil filters on the market. Its not scientific but pretty thorough. There were a number if similarities that pointed to mfg A or mfg B making this or that filter. It seems like the Penzoil was determined to be a Purolator or Wix. I don't recall, its been a while. I'm pretty partial to the Fleetguard Stratopore (sp?) since Fleetguard is a part of Cummins and I can get them for a good price close to me.

Is it difficult to get the LF3894 off on the new engine? Based on the FAQ post here and on Fleetguard's website the only difference between it and the filter spec'd for it is the fluting on the base to use a wrench on. I've been using a band type wrench with a square drive on my 01 and I'm thinking it should work on the 3rd gen engine as well.

Maybe your friend would let you drive over the pit in his "store" but you change your oil, filter, lub it , and check the boxes. And bring your own oil and filter - I'm partial to Fleetgard. Don't skimp on taking care of that Cummins - it will still take better care of you than you will of it.

Thanks for replying. I own a 99 CTD with over 165000 miles, and all I will use is the Fleetgards, but I was wanting to show him what kind of group we have in the TDR. I brag on everybody in the TDR to everyone I meet, saying there problably isn't a problem someone on here can't solve. So please tell me what website to go to where it lists what filter manuf. are approved for the 2003 CTD. Thanks.

I use this filter wrench on my 03 it works great, got that OEM filter off no problem. It's a Snap-On FWA6296 and runs about $25. Once I use my stock of LF3894s up I'll have to order that new filter number.

It's a piece of cake to put the non-fluted filters on. I simply removed the intake hose off the turbo and R&Rd the filter from above with my band wrench.

As far a filter choice, I don't think you can do any better than the Fleetguard Stratapore. I've noticed every other filter I've looked at the oil passages around the perimiter of the base are smaller than the Stratapore. Remember the CTD oil pump cranks out 17gpm. . . yes 17 gallons per minute. . . of flow.

The standard Fleetguard filter for the '03 is LF3972 (has fluting).

As dslcummins said, the correct stratopore for the '03 is LF16035.
