I know this subject has been broached before but I just wanted to reiterate!
A week ago I noticed a few drops of oil on the garage floor and thought it was the blow-by. I then took a 1000 mile trip and never thought another thing about it. I have been changing oil every 5K and filter every 2. 5K. Well, when I reached down to take off the old filter, it was two revolutions loose--and down only a 1/2 quart. All I am a happy camper. Needles to say, I put the next filter on with the wrench. Piss on finger tight!

I learned that the hard way on previous rigs after oil pumped all over the place..... filter people say that because people get pissed when they use wrench, then can't get them off after they get hot. You're right. Piss on hand tight. Use wrench.

When you remove old filter make sure the rubber gasket comes off. Two gaskets will cuase leaking.

how much piss on the fingers to do the tightness???buut seriously folks, didn't someone come up with an anti-rotating hose clamp idea and on-the-block anchor point??

I install hand tight, but with the additional vibration of a diesel as a safegfuard I mark the oil filter with a black magic marker and everytime I have the hood open I check the mark. If it moves I see it... . in theory... . it hasn't moved yet. Different strokes for different folks...

I just changed my oil and filter after 5K miles. The oil filter had loosened up a bit, hardly causing any effort to spin it off. It was the last LF3552 I had so I made a point of checking it regularly because of some of the discussion about it's use on the 24V engine. No oil had leaked past the seal. I don't like using oil filter wrenches in tight quarters and while our filter location isn't as bad as alot of other vehicles, especially just about any Ford, it's still moderately difficult getting in there. Different strokes for different folks. I check the filter every time I'm under the hood, which is twice a week on average. This should catch any loosening up of the filter. Glad you caught the problem before it cost you your engine, Tlippy. Hey by the way, was that a stock filter or a BOMB'ed filter? #ad

Aviation filters have a star tab & nut welded to the end of the filter so you can safety wire it to the engine block. You can do the same thing with the stock filter. After tightning the filter, secure a piece of safety wire under a stainless hose clamp tightned around the filter housing (close to the base so as not to squish the filter case) and then tie the safety wire to a convenient location on the filter mount or engine. Be sure to route the wire in a "tightning" fashion, that is, as if the wire was trying to screw the filter on tighter. That should do it.

I changed the oil in my Dodge today. What a pain. As soon as you crack the plug, you get 2 quarts of oil up your sleeve. We have 7 different oil filter wrenches, but I had to use the screwdriver stunt to get it off. I hand tightend the filter , but after filling it, and it's position, it's not hand tight. This time I'll mark it, thanks tailpipe. Next time I'll clamp and wire it, thanks rwv. I'll also be looking for another filter wrench, a smaller chain wrench. By the way does anyone know what oil DC uses? It turned green and gooey when it cooled off in the drain pan. Cheers, bilford

I found a strap wrench works good to remove oil filter.

to remove the old filter, I do it warm, and wear one of those cheap, light blue leather Wells Lamont gloves with that split cowhide, fuzzy surface... any stray oil just absorbs into the leather, rather than creating the elusive hydrodynamic wedge in the glove/filter-can interface... I've never needed any wrench, or puncturing to get them off (from THIS truck)----best prevention--don't let Steroid Stan at Cheapie Lube touch, fondle, or even so much as look at your truck, unless it's for sale and he's got the appropriate cashier's check, or a briefcase full o' cash. .

I have changed the oil and filter six times so far in my '98. 5 24v using the Fleetguard LF3552 Microglass all but the last time, which is when I switched to the LF3894 StrataPore. I have never experienced the filter loosening problem that others have. Each time I've removed the old filter, they were on AT LEAST as tight as when I installed them. I prefill the new filter with oil, lightly lubricate the rubber seal ("gasket"), clean the seal contact surface on the block, and hand tighten 3/4-1 turn more after gasket contact with the block. If I remember correctly, this usually takes both hands to tighten the filter to this spec. I use a large oil filter wrench (like a large pair of slip-joint pliers) purchased through Griot's Garage in Fife, WA. (http://www.griotsgarage.com) to remove (ONLY) the old oil filter, which can be accomplished in seconds. This is by far the easiest and most expedient way to remove the old filter. A lower cost (same basic design, lesser quality) alternative can be purchased at Wal-Mart.

OBTW, TLippy, I thought you said you coaxed your Dodge dealer into installing your last oil filter (for free) for providing the latest Fleetguard filter update information to him. Is this true? As I remember, you went with the Dodge equivalent of the new Fleetguard LF3885 (cellulose filtering media) oil filter. I would think you would want to take the filter loosening problem up with them. That is precisely the reason I perform my own maintenance! I will only have myself to blame if the quality of my work is poor.

The hose clamp/attach point on the block is an easy, quick remedy for this problem.
On some of the old radial engines we had was set up like this, and believe me, these things can do some unblelievable vibrating while idling and we never had or heard of any problems with this setup.
BTW On old '96' I have never had a problem with the hand tightend oil filter coming loose or seepage during the 95 miles I've put on it.
