I just drain the oil from the pan, then check out every thing on the underside of the truck, go have a soda or something for around 20 minutes to 1/2 hr. The oil will siphon out of the filter if you wait that long, and then there's no mess. I have always tightened my filters by hand, and never had a problem. Many many filters. I like the idea of lettin the wife do it though and bangin on the oil pan when she's finished.
I thought the P700 pump took upward of two hours to drain? I pull in after midnight coming off second shift, throw the pan under and flip the drain valve. Come morning, it's all ready to pull the filter. By the way, I lay the new filter on the seat so I don't do something real stupid.

I have to give my filter a pretty good twist else it tends to be loose when I do the change.

I've never waited that long. The filter still had oil in it, but not enough to spill while getting it out. Good idea with the new filter. I usually leave an oil container in the drivers seat.

When I remove the old filter I put it in an extra drain pan I have. Then I knock a few holes in the bottom of it with a chipping hammer so most of the oil drains out. Pretty hard to mess up and put it back on doing that.

wrench

i have used a hammer and chisel from day one.

a few taps and its broke loose and you spin it from

there. i have better luck laying under my truck

and reaching up to spin on the new filter.

works for me.

Thumbs up for the Screwdriver and 6 pound minisledge method, I have to use this method due to a large heat shield that keeps me from using a wrench on the filter.

Just use the screwdriver on the rim of the top of the filter, couple hits and it spins freely, then handtight with line mark.
