Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Oil filter ????

I changed my filter yesterday, and noticed that the filter was only half full. This is only my second filter change since owning this truck, using the microglass P/N LF3552. When I changed the oil on my old 99 I would get a lot of oil running down the sides of filter (when unscrewed), also the same with any of my cars. So I'm wondering if I have a problem. By the way oil pressure is good.

If the engine has been off for a period time, maybe an hr? I think, that some drains back to the crank case thus a parshly filled filter. The over flowing could be whats still in the line from the turbo draining out. how ever these filters do have a check valve (if you will) to check this.

I have found if I change my filter within 1 hour of shuting down the engine, I get oil all over the place and running down the sides of the filter, almost like it is still pressurized. When I change the filter after about 3 hours or so from shutting down then I notice there is a lot less oil in the filter as well as no spillage from when I change it after about 1 hour from shutdown.

Your filter findings are most likely normal.

I am the same way, I often change my filters after the truck has sat for the night. It makes no mess and everything is cooled down. Same goes for the engine oil, after it has sat for the night, all of the oil has drained down to the pan, making for a better more complete oil change. Just remember to pre-fill the oil filter canister with fresh oil before you screw it back on.

My 1996 acts the same way: About half a filter full if I change the oil more than an hour after running.

Same for me. It is normal.
