My oil filter keeps loosening up. I had this happen twice, noticed oil on the floor checked the filter and it was about to fall off. I tighten it to the point where I don't know if I'm going to get it off. Any thoughts?

Simon,I have pretty much have always ignored the tightening instructions on oil filters when it comes to diesels, they just vibrate too much and work the filters loose. I tighten mine as tight as I can by hand then give a half turn more with a oil filter wrench. It could be your gasket is messed up also, buzz over the river to Jerry's and pick up a WIX for 5 bucks, cheap insurance.

I noticed the same thing when I changed the oil last. The filter was extreamly loose. I don't want to put too much umph on it while tightening (I have a tendancy to break things). I been checking the filter at fuel ups when I drain the WIF. If you do this, be careful it will be a little warm.

I do the same as illflem. Give it half a turn after hand tightening. Check it every few days to see if any weeping.

I tighten it with the filter wrench, but I hold my hand close to the filter so I don't over tighten. Also, a while back someone said to mark it with a magic marker, which I do. It's easy to check that way. Haven't had any problems.
