Oil filters...

We all know which oil filters we SHOULD be using, but howz about a Fram or STP filter in a pinch. Thoughts?

Fram is junk. I am not sure about the STP brand.

In a pinch go buy an AC Delco or Wix, Puralator, those are all good brands.

not trying to start a flame war but... whats wrong with FRAM? I personally dont use em, but I dont see why they would be such garbage...

Well I have seen engines that have burned cylinders and pistons due to Frams and other crap filters that have let filtration media into the lube system and clogged piston cooling nozzles consequentially cutting off lubrication to the piston and cylinder in question.

I have checked with a number of Dodge dealers in the Central Va. area and they all say that Cummins will more than likely void a warranty, if the owner is caught with a FRAM filter. My opinion, "You are better off with Toilet paper than you are with Fram". I have had to many problems with Fram Filters in the past years.

My uncle is a shop inspector for an extended warrantee company. He travels to shops and looks at failures basically to be sure the shop isn't trying to put it to the warrantee company. He said 70 percent of the contaminated oil failures he sees are Fram filters. Often he'll cut them open to take a sample and the paper will not be properly glued in the base so the oil can just flow around it. Fleetguard, Purilator, Napa Gold, Hastings, Wix, Caterpillar... these are good filters. Fram, Castite, and quick lube brands are the ones to be avoiding.

Hi guys I just changed my oil/oil filter and fuel filter this morning and the mopar fuel filter says Fleetguard right on it. Anybody know if all mopar filters are Fleetguards? Just a thought for discussion.

Mopar filters for the Cummins application are whatever is recommended by Cummins then Mopar relabels them. Cummins owns Fleetguard so of course, that's what they recommend.

yep they are... the fleetguards are usually cheaper to buy than blue painted mopar ones... and you can get the stratapore filter media on the fleetguard ones. the mopar filter is identical to the standard celeulose fleetguard filter

Both the original and the Mopar replacement fuel filter said Fleetguard stratopore right on it. I didn't know Cummins owns Fleetguard but that makes sense. Thanks for the info guys.

I agree everyone would be better off with a toiliet paper filter, not just fram users. I use a frantz Toilet paper by-pass filter myself.

Just today I took this pic, on the left is a NAPA Gold filter and the right a Fleetguard. Looks to me like the inlet holes on the NAPA would be more restrictive than the Fleetguard. Then again maybe not if the media inside filters less.

I heard Napa has had some trouble in the past with filters for the CTD. Coming apart and ruining some engines? Apparentley Napa covered it. Any one else heard that?
