Yeap,

Yes, I do fill new Amzoil SDF-80 filter with a new quart of Amzoil 15-40 marine full synthetic before putting it on. I have a standard 5-speed.

Elite1, I tend to lean toward using synthetics. They have a higher break down temp. (400deg) where regular oil starts to seperate at 180 deg. , That's why you should change regular oil every 3-4k! If you keep a synthetic clean ( use a good filter system like a duel bypass) it will go forever. I tested mine every 6months for three years and the analyises still showed good lub! Yes, if you have leaks now, fix them, because a synthetic will clean them and leak more... but i like products that will keep my diesel's insides clean and lubed. You can always switch back if the leakage is to great.

Rule use to be about 30 some years ago that you could go 500 miles for every qt. of oil your engine held between changes. That was with the old 30 wt. dino oil. I would say you would be real safe just following the manufactures recommendations in our owners manuals (based on your driving schle A or B). All of the members on this site are anal about their trucks, thats why we usually over maintain them. Nothing wrong with that. We just provide great used trucks to the resale market :D

Hello Elite1,

I too am considering the switch to Mobil Delvac 1 full synthetic in the CT & the Mercedes 300SD.

I'd like to hear what you decided and how you have faired.

Thanks,

Robin :D

Pit bull..... I would go atleast 12K on Delvac or Amsoil between changes with a filter change at 6K.

I have done six 24-26K intervals between changes with no bypass, lots of city driving and arctic cold. Sample, new filter every 6K. Have yet to have a sample come back recomending the oil be changed. I quit at 24K or so because it has surpased the ecomnomics of running Rotella or Delo and 4 or 6K changes.

Unless one only drives 6K per year, makes over 400 hp and uses it every day (lot of black smoke daily), the 3K or 5K changes are extrememly conservative. It is like change tires with 12/32 left.

There is a reason Cummins is stretching the 2003 oil service to 15K.

These engines run extremely clean.

Robin, I did switch over to Delvac1 about 3000 miles back, haven't noticed any difference in performance, no leaks... . I'll change the filter at about 6000. One difference I notice is the oil seems to stay cleaner, when you check the dip stick. I've noticed the same thing with my wifes Toy. 4-runner, it has about 175,000 miles on it and have run mobil1 since first oil change, that oil always looks as pure as honey, never seems to get dirty.
