Okay, I've got oil leaking from the downstream intercooler hose. I'm assuming that is an indication that I am in need of a turbo rebuild but I thought I would check just to make sure.

EDIT: I've got 123K on the odo.

Thanks,

Jeff

Not necessarily. Have you pulled the hose to see if the oil is in fact inside it. If it is, DO NOT DRIVE THE TRUCK. You have all the makings of a run away.

Hopefully it is just oil from another source that is dripping off the hose. If not trace up stream from the oil trace inside the intercooler pipes to find the source. If the turbo is bad make sure the dealer removes and cleans the oil from the intercooler.

From the few quick looks I've taken it does not appear to be a leak from another source. Assuming that I find oil in the intercooler and upstream hoses, at that point I can assume it is time for a rebuild? I will do the work (minus the rebuild) so another question I have is how the heck do you clean oil from the intercooler?

Thanks,

Jeff

If you are going to use a hydrocarbon based cleaner make sure you flush it with a water based cleaner and try to dry it before installing. If you leave any combustible residue you can still have a run away.

Hot soapy water should work just fine. The turbo cleaner and EGR cleaners from MOPAR are both water based.

Update

Information from Holset indicated that a restricted inlet could cause oil to leak through the turbo. So I have changed my air filter and that seems to have stopped it. I changed it less than 10K miles ago and when I checked it last, it didn't look all that bad. I usually go about 15k before changing them. No real change in driving conditions. Not sure why the filter would plug up earlier than usual. Although I am now considering different ways to open up the airflow into the filter box.

I have recently noticed an oil leak from behind the turbon housing (near the oil line). I too have oil going into the intercooler. I don't feel as if I have an inlet restriction. What else could be the problem and the fix?

excessive idling and inlet air restriction are two of the main causes of "slobbering"... Short of that, the cartridge probably needs rebuilt or replaced.
