oil/fuel filter changes

you should fallow you owners manuel for the specifics on the intervals. i have an 03 and change it about every 10 k. but i only use synthetic. if you use standard dyno oil the interval should be shorter. since it is about 10 k you engine is almost broken in so some sugest you run the dyno since the synthetic is to slick for break in. i personally changed the dyno for synthetic after 4k. so far no issues after 54k. i run valvoline blue synthetic. and please dont open up the oil can of worms and ask whick one is best. believe me every one has their opinion there! by the by an oil change at the local valvoline shop runs a hundred bucks (another reason i do it at 10k intervals not every 5k)

Fuel filter = 10K miles



Oil change = 5K miles

I go 10,000 most generally, sometimes more. I'm loaded a lot, but do very little to no stop/go driving.



At 60,000+ I ought to do and oil sample on my 6th (or is that 5th ) oil change huh?



Where can a guy get that done reasonably anyway?

Kinda rural here, but the more I think about it, I'll make a couple calls. I think I'll have a sample of this oil done, it has close to 15,000 miles on it.

I suggest carrying a spare fuel filter. Mine clogged up with only 7k on it and I'd have been in for a costly tow bill had I not been prepared.

Wow, you must have had a load of bad fuel. Just changed mine the other day. It had over 30K on it! I do keep a spare one under the back seat.

I'm an old fashioned guy. Change my oil and filter at five to six thousand miles on my '03. Cummins will let me extend it longer, but I've just felt better about keeping clean oil in the trucks. Same for my 855's. We'd try to do them every 7500 miles, but never longer than 10K. Always used Delo 15W40 and see no reason to change.

I'm curious. How do you know your oil is clean? Do you do oil analysis of anykind?

Thanks yet again, forgot to keep up with this post. Is there a back issue of the mag or a post that tells/shows how to do the fuel filter for this '03 3500 ? How about filling the filter, will the engine pull the air out ? Will I need a catch basin ?

Note to jimnance- this boat's had these two 855's since 1979, they've been gone thru once, except for the cam shafts. I don't pull alot of hp out of 'em, but they sure are simple reliable critters, and lots of metal, very old style.

trawler, the filter is in a canister on the drivers side if the engine. A 1 1/16 socket fits the plastic nut on top and the filter pulls out with the cap, install new filter and O ring and tighten down. Filter snaps into the cap thingie. Once you go to start afterwards if the engine does not start readily ( probably won't) the lift pump stays running for like 25 seconds to refill the canister!! Check for leaks and you are done !!
