Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Replacing oil cooler?

Upon inspecting my coolant level today I noticed a small amount of what apeared to be oil in it. I also noticed that after a heavy tow, there is almost always a small amount of oil around the top pulley on the passanger side. I can clean it and it will stay clean till the next time I tow. I thought kdp, but I think that is pre 99. Could it be a blown head gasket or a combo of problems? Any ideas would help. The truck is a 2002 ho 6 speed 4x4.

Very likely your headgasket.

With the engine off and cool enough to remove the radiator cap, start the engine with the rad. cap off and then look in the radiator fill hose for air bubbles in the coolant. This is typically a sure sign of a blown head gasket.

I checked for bubbles and didnt see any, but there is a very small amount of oil in antifreze. Is there anywhere else this oil could come from? the motor was rebuilt at the dealer under cummins warranty at 99600 miles when I lost my #6 piston the truck curently has 107000 miles on it. Perhaps something was put together wrong?

What Surfbeetle said - never hurts to pull out the old paperwork and see what it says or just call - it's been less than 10k since the rebuild they need to cover it.

After some research and a few phone calls, I belive I may have an oil cooler thats gone bad. Anybody have any experience with a faulty oil cooler?

It has a plate type oil cooler directly behind the oil filter. I have never seen one fail on a B-series, But the ones I have seen fail on other Machines Have put a Large amount of oil in the coolant, I guess that may depend on the severity of the cooler failure. I am sure there is a procedure for checking the cooler. It usually involves pressureizing(sp?) the oil side with air, then submerge it in a bucket of water to look for bubbles.

I can't imagine it being the cooler, but It would be easier to fix than a head gasket. Pat
