I am posting this on behalf of a friend who has a 12V, I hang out in the 24V section normally.

There is a pretty good oil leak that appears to be coming from high on the block toward the front of the drivers side. It looks like there might be a cover there where the oil is leaking from. In the attached photo you can see the seam at the bottom of this cover/plate where we think the oil is leaking from.

Is an oil leak from this area common? Will this require replacing a gasket or can this be tightened? Very hard to see in this area as it is behind the injection pump.

Any help would be appreciated.

I doubt if the KDP has been fixed, he bought the truck used and I know he has not done it.

My first guess was the vacuum pump too, but I don't think that is it, looks more to be on the block, thus my question about a cover on the drivers side???

This might be the tappet cover leaking. Repair would probably involve removing the p-pump and other accessories to gain access to the cover.

not to whizz in his wheaties, I just bought a used 12v and guess what, I thought for sure my HUGE oil leak was at the vaccum pump gasket. . not ... the KDP wacked the case right there and split it then dissapeared... requireing the replacment of the cover... major surgery. his may just be loose a common deal as well.

kdp just got me... last thing i heard before the major oil leak was a quick grind POP... . and next thing i know is a quart of 15-40 every morning... waiting for the guy to give me the price on fixing it along with hte fuel timing... . s**t the fuel pump has to come off right?

pita!... cam has to come out to change the cover! the short of that is lots has to happen before it gets pulled out.

gear cover from cummins was $280, gaskets $60, and of course your going to need the dowel pin for a couple bucks to line it all up right when it goes back on, might as well do the water pump your right there, add another $120 from cummins... oh wait, the balancer rubber dont look so good. . better get one of those also... :{ oh and labor for a all day project chachiing$$$$$.

Shelby, that picture is the tappet cover. It takes an experienced mech about 8 hours labor to R/R all the stuff and replace the gasket ($16 from Cummins). Just had mine done. In hindsight I should have bought a timing kit and done the job myself.
