I have a leak on the drivers side of the truck. I pressure washed it and drove it awhile and noticed that the drivers side of the block had oil on it. it was behind and below the fuel filter. could it be leaking from the vacuum pump??

I originally thought it was the rear main seal or the vent tube, but I dont think so now. a puddle the size of a tennis ball always forms where I park. any help would be appreciated

Not sure where it could be coming from if it is around the fuel filter area. I highly doubt it is your vacuum pump as it is at the front of the engine whereas the fuel filter is towards the back. I would check headgasket or your injection pump could be leaking some how if it is running down the side of the block.

how bad is the leak? the mechanical pump is behind and below the injection pump, could be a gasket there, also make sure its not coming out of your AFC housing anywhere, if you over/undertorqued the 4 bolts on top when putting in the 0 plate, it can spew from there too. one more question... 53 block? good luck

Yup, that's another place I forgot to mention. Your lift pump could be leaking oil from where it mates to the block. I was going to mention the AFC housing but didn't know how long you have been running the number 0 plate.

53 block was another question, but aren't those kind of rare for '94 engines??

Hey,

can you clean it off really well one more time. then start the truck up and lay under it with a shop light and watch it until you see where the leak starts. this might help you pinpoint the source before oil is all over the place.

Passenger Side Upper Oil Leak

I have a 97 with 290k... I cleaned my engine and 1k miles later I noticed oil slightly puddled around each of the injectors a surrounding area... I just aquired the truck and it's my first Cummins. Is this a typical occurence and should I be concerned???

(Recovering previous two-time Powerstroke owner)

Yes, it's typical. Leaky valve cover gaskets. Get some new ones from Cummins - the gray ones - and your engine will stay nice and purty... well, at least you won't be leaking oil from there any more :) Then you can move on and start attacking the other leaks :)

Shewww, That's what I was hoping the issue would be. I just ordered a #10 plate this afternoon and I was worried about any added stress to the engine. Now if I can just determine if I need to add a AFC Spring kit... Again thanks for your expert online-analysis...

Before you install your plate or anything else, you need to do 2 things: 1) tab your KDP and loctite as many gear housing bolts as you can get to; 2) install gauges. Get yourself a BIG cup of coffee, do a search for "KDP", and do some reading. At 290k, if it hasn't already been dealt with, you need to take care of that KDP right now. Once that's done, get those gauges on so you can establish a performance baseline. Then you'll be able to tell how your BOMBs are performing above baseline.

Btw... Welcome to TDR!

Have fun.

Tappet cover and injection pump linkage (speed lever bushing/seal) and the fuel shutdown lever bushing/seal are also possibilities. Also ck, the fittings on the braided steel oil lines at the oil rifle on the block, vac. pump connection and at the backside of the injection pump.

Good luck. . let us know what you find.
