My 98 12 valve has been leaking some motor oil for sometime and is now getting worse,i cleaned it up today and it looks like its leaking about at the 5 oclock position of motor if your facing the front of the motor,it looks like its were the timing case seals against the block, what can i expect this to cost me to have repaired. Thanks Jason

Its not the dowel pin its been jigged, can the case be moved out enough just by loosening the cover bolts to sqeeze in some silicone? If the case has to come off I have seen that the cam gear can be removed to get the gear case off with out removing the camshaft. Is this a common way to put a new gasket behind the gearcase or when replacing case? Thanks Jason

Glad you're jigged. The way I've seen the dealer fix a case to block leak when under warranty is to remove the case cover and loosen the bolts attaching the case, PS, vac and injection pumps then pry the case back from the block for silicone. It's not the way I'd go about it but it seems to work. Replacing the gasket actually requires as much work as replacing a kdp cracked case. If it's just the cover gasket, piece of cake.

Bill has a point, it could be the vacuum pump or even PS pump. Clean everything well, I like Castrol Super-Clean, and spray it down with aerosol athletes foot powder then drive a short distance. The oil will leave a easy to follow trail in the powder to the leak.

question..........

I'm having my mechanic replace the leaking rear seal on the timing housing, tab the pin, change the diffs and t-case oil, and flush the radiator. All for $375. Is that a fair price? I know its a pretty big job the pull the timing case but that's where my leak was. I'm just glad it wasn't the KDP!!!!

He said Merry Christmas after he quoted me the price;)

I'm sure he knows what he was in for, he's been a ASE Cummins tech sence 89'. I'm sure he know all the tricks.

I'd like to know how he does the case leak, that's what will take the time. Make sure to ask and report back. Sounds like the mechanic you found is a jewel.

He made a tool to pull the cam gear so that cuts down some and he only removed the radiator instead of the inner cooler, condenser, bumper, and such. I'll get it back Monday, I can wait to drive it with it timed and all.

He swears I'll love it!
