I have an oil leak around the drivers side front of the engine. I have a sneaky suspicion that it's coming from the vacuum pump seal. Has anybody out there had this problem?
My friend's vacuum pump is leaking on his 99. We tried to get one from cummins and they told me that it was on factory backorder and it was about $600. 00 They said they didn't offer a rebuild kit for these pumps. You may try aftermarket to get a pump for less money or it may still be under warranty. Remember these trucks have a 5 year 100000 warranty on the engine.
My vacuum pump is leaking as well. I did a search and found that TDR member CPFF has the correct seal and o-rings needed to rebuild the pump. The cost for these seals was a whopping $24 including shipping.
Just to be clear, I have an oil leak, not a vacuum leak and I'm not absolutely positive it's coming from the vacuum pump but it sure looks like it does.
Cliffman, I meant to say I had an oil leak coming from the vacuum pump. Dealer replaced under warrantey. Then a couple months later I thought the new vacuum pump was leaking, so back to the Dealer. But this time it was coming from the power steering fill cap, Dealer replaced cap and been ok since.
I have replaced the seal in my pump twice (115k and 240k). I now have 287k (1998. 5)and no leak. If you remove the pump and break down the pump/gear assembly, you will find the seal. The seal has numbers which will reveal the size/type. The shaft on the pump will show some wear (polished) but it still seats fine. I bought 5 seals for $25. They had a minimal order charge. It took about 4 hours.
AGibson, I thought it was the gasket where the pump bolts up to the back of the timing cover. Where is the "seal" located and is it used to seal up engine oil, power steering fluid or vacuum?
I had this problem too. as it turned out the o-ring on the addapter housing between the pumps had got hard, the seal was ok. Found o-ring that matched and reassembled, leak has been gone for 25k now. Jrawson 99 QCab 4x4
Today I spent some time trying to locate exactly where on the vacuum pump the oil leak is coming from. After letting it idle in my driveway for 20 minutes and not finding any leak I decided to take it for a short drive. Still nothing. Next I took it for a 10 mile drive and whala, found the leak. It's coming from the gasket where it bolts to the back of the timing cover. Not the "O" ring where the power steering pump bolts to the back of the vacuum pump. It's dripping right off the bottom bolt and it's not coming from above. So I tried to tighten up the bottom bolt and I couldn't do it with a 3/8 drive so I broke out the 1/2 drive and got a 1/4 turn on it. Took it for another 10 mile drive and the leak is worse Not sure what to do at this point. Do I pull the pump, put it on the bench while I have it out and install new "O" rings or try to just un-bolt it, slide it back and slide another gasket in without taking it out completely What do you guys think?
