Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Leak

Hi Cliffman,

I was off line for a few days rebuilding my 47RE automatic transmission (my first auto).

The pump has an oil line that provides lubrication (on the bottom). It is about the worst to tackle. I replaced mine because I thought it was the cause of my leak (wrong). If you take the pump assembly out I would replace the oil seal also. I can let you know the ordering information tonight when I get home so that you can locate one. The dealerships do not sell just the seal or even list one. They do sell the complete assembly for about $600. Any good hydraulic shop can locate a seal for you. If not I can send you one.

The seal is between the power steering pump and the mechancial drive that bolts to the back of the timing cover. The engine oil flows to/pressurizes the mechanical drive and leaks past the seal. It is very hard to spot the leak because of the air turbulence in the engine compartment.

Ask for a 38mm od x 28mm id x 7mm thick with double lip viton material seal.

The seal that I have is a TCM oil seal, part 28X38X7TC. The bar code on the box is 7 50886 08079 4. I had to by 5 because of the minimum order ($20). It take about 2 hours to complete the job. Good luck.

I'm pretty sure it's not the seal unless we are calling the gasket between the engine block and the pump a "seal". Never the less, I'm going to replace all the "O" rings and seals in the pump. I do need to replace that gasket and I don't think that CPFF's kit comes with a new one. Can I order that part from my local dealer?

The dealers and even Cummins don't list any seals. Just the complete assembly ($600). The hardest part of the job will be the oil line and the bolt on the bottom of the power steering pump. It has a support bracket off the block. Once you have the pump assembly out the seal is very simple to replace.
