I knew when I bought this '98 dually that it had some oil leaks, but didn't think it was something to worry about. It's not like I'm losing a quart everytime I drive it but it definetely leaves it's mark, especially after towing. It doesn't have any effect on preformance, that I can notice, and the oil pressure stays steady. But now I'm starting to wonder How much is too Much? I'm trying to locate a good diesel mechanic in the front range/Denver area of CO. Any input greatly appreciated!

Certainly needs to be looked at. Mine leaves it's mark from the blowby tube after every drive, but never below full at the 5k oil change.

If it is real bad from front, check the timing cover for cracks from the KDP. Vacuum pump seal can be messy, as a bad rocker cover gasket. Most leaks are just a PITA, not a serious problem.

The po told me that the kdp was taken care a while back so I don't think it's coming from the timing cover. I just gotta bring it to someone who knows these engines and what to look for cause I don't know.

The problem with small oil leaks is that they leave stains anywhere you go so your friends get mad when you park in their driveway. As long as the oil level is full, then you aren't hurting the engine. For anyone who has experience with detroits, you know that small oil leaks are not a concern.

I would suggest trying to locate the leak by cleaning off the stain and then watching it start again. If the leak is really small and won't get bigger, then it is your call as to what to do. If it is large or has the potential to get worse, then it should be fixed.

I'll keep an eye on the level. Fortunately I don't have a paved drive and I park outside. Most of my job sites are dirt also so that's no biggy. I guess I'm justl a little self conscience about it. Never had a rig that leaked so much:-laf

My 24valve definitely marks its territory, I know where it is coming from (front and rear seals ;) ) but not going to do anything about it... I just figure it is trying to pave its parking area. I would say I lose 2quarts for every 5k miles, never gets below the bottom end of "safe" on the stick.
Good luck, I am hoping to scrape together the $$ this summer to pick up a 12v 4x4 before next winter.
