hello, i just did my first oil change. 05 2500 ctd. i filled the oil filter and added the remaining 3 gallons of oil to the crankcase, ran the engine for a few minutes, let it set about 2 hours, checked the oil level and its about 1/4 to 3/8 inches below the full mark on the dipstick. the manual specifically says pour one quart of oil in the filter and pour the remaining 11 in the crankcase. should i add oil till its up to the full mark or leave it as is? thanks

Congrats on the truck! IF you have no leaks, the proper amount of oil is the 12 quarts, not the full mark on the dip stick... I believe there is a TSB for improper indication of oil on the dipstick.

Cheers, Bill

I would leave it as it is. Mine take exactly 3 gallons and that is it.

You probably have some of that new thick oil hung up on top of the head or other places. Or maybe your dipstick is slightly off.

I checked the oil in my truck this morning and it was quite a bit a bit above the full mark. 1000 miles on the new truck. Sure hope it is not over filled! :(

Okie, depends on what you are calling quite a bit. My new truck came with the oil level about 1/4 inch above the full mark and it stayed there until the first oil change. After that, 12 quarts brought it just slightly over the full mark, maybe 1/10 inch. I suspect these long dipsticks may vary slightly in length from truck to truck.
