Off Roading Oil loss on steep grade

Off Roading King of the hill in Utah

Competition Pulls in Missouri

I recently read about our trucks losing oil out of the breather tube on a steep grade. I also read that there was a TSB for this. How do you know if the revised part is on your truck? I have a 2002 built in February (I think).

Thanks.

I would think if you wanted to increase your incline ability without loss of oil you could extend the vent lines outlet up a few inches, this would give you the advantage of the highest point vent and would hopefully be above the oil level when going downhill... ... ... ..... Kevin

can't we just put a real oil cap on that also has a breather, like the bigger cummins engines have?

Because the breather is at the front of the valve cover when you go down hill all of the oil pools in the front and then draines out the breather tube. I did this to my Moms truck:mad:

The TSB will replace the valve cover with a new one that the breather is located in the middle of the valve cover. it costs about $700:eek: for labor and the VP44 has to be removed to do it.

How about an easier fix??????

Don't drive down steep hills:D

Was thinking of a fix to cap off the vent hose and get the rebreather system called airsep. it is $450 but it seems to be a good closed system effect.

I drive the big rigs and they have the vent on the top of the valve cover on the rear and it loops over and down the side. I would think this would be a good way to fix that as well.

how is it poss. that the new cover would be $700 ??? just a new part and maybe an hour labor or so..... ????

a $600 cover??? come on..... I mean really... .

Hey Eric

My local dealer charged me $45 for a single fuel filter(no installation here), anything is possible! Of course it was also possible that I returned to my senses and returned both of them, which I did.

A friend of mine has the TSB printed out. At the time that I posted we could not find the printout but that is what he said that it would cost if he remembered right:eek: (probably not)

So I can't verify that.

As Jandtjil said "anything is possible" especially with stealers I mean dealers:D

What is the TSB? I tried to find it and there is no listing for the breather hose. at least on the TSB listings... .

I think I will do the airsep system from walker engineering

at www.walkerairsep.com

It is $450 so much better than the $700 dealer. it makes it a closed system and they say the oil gets separated from the vapor to be returned to the CC. then the vapor get reburned. Maybe a little extra power? who knows

:) Something to think about with the air sep. (Not Bad Mouthing Here) As the vapor gets pulled through the cooler, I would think it might want to condense some. You might have to work at cleaning the cooler every couple of years. Food for thought. ;)

oh the air cooler? I don't know if it needs it, since the vapor and air go through the turbo, I bet that any condensation would go away before then...

I got a list on the TSB on whats involved to replace the tappet cover on the side. WOW almost everything but "Remove engine" is what is involved. it said that it was reimbersible within the provisions of the warranty... ... . ???? whats that about? is it free or what????
