I stopped using Rotella because of the stink. I have free life time oil changes through the stealership and that is all they use for diesels. After complaining for close to a year bout the smell, finally took the manager for a ride. I now get Penz at oil changes. Still get a touch of smell but nothing like the Rotella.

When Rotella "T" Syn went to a CJ rating from the CI I switched to Royal Purple 15/40 its the only one I can find locally that is still rated "CI". Kinda miss the smell.

If the smell is bothering you you need to go with Amsoil, or Royal Purple. Of course the cost will probably scare you away:eek:, but either of these oils will lower the smell significantly.

At our local parts store,Royal Purple goes for $10. 00 a quart to start for 5 W30 and never priced the weight for diesel. Been thinking of trying Amsoil for my wifes rig since she puts on 100 miles a day commuting to work and would like to look into extending oil changes. Since I have free oil changes on my truck,I'll stick with what the stealership puts in each change.

Your right the stuff is rather expensive. With tax i pay $99. 00 for 13 quarts. I change it every quarter (4 to 5K), seems reasonable for the protection.

If your wife's vehicle is in mechanicly sound condition, the Amsoil will last for a full year or 25,000 miles... ... ... whichever comes first! I have used it in all my vehicles since 1980, and have never had any issues at all. I even used it in a 1988 Dodge Shadow ES with turbo, and changed it out every year. When wrecked at 155,000 miles, it was still a perfect running car, passing emmisions standards every year!

I installed a oil bypass filter couple years ago and have been changing my oil at the usual 3-5K mile intervals and also have BlackStone labs analyze the oil. I've decided to bump up the interval to 10K miles and also send in a sample to see where I stand. My old samples always came out clean and it was suggested it was safe to extend the intervals. Since I have free oil changes,I figured by bother. But for poops and grins I wanna see how far I can safely go. But... ..... since I only put on less then 3K miles last year, not sure if it will be safe to let it go that long.

I have the Amsoil By-Pass utilizing the EabP-100 filter element. the system was installed in April 2003 at 8,700 miles. I analyize every 10,000 miles, and is currently approaching 90,000 on the truck. The oil plug has not been out since installing back in April 2003, and the oil is still testing great. Soot is less than 0. 5 %, and Viscosity is still reading 14. 6 cSt@100 C. which is in the middle of the Viscosity requirements of a 40 Grade oil. TBN is 6. 44 at the last analysis.

Bottom line:

Oil change intervals can be accomplished easily if a good filtration is used, and oil analysis is done on a regular basis.

The smell is coming from the blow by tube on the drivers side of the motor above the front axle. It is definitely the Rotella. I have used this oil since I purchased the truck new and it didn't smell until after that first oil change. The smell will slowly go away over 2000 to 3000 miles.

I slid a piece of clear vinyl tubing over the blow by tube and ran it on a steady slope to the back of the transfer case attaching it with plastic cable ties. No more stink.

This also solved another problem too. I thought my rear main crank seal was leaking but after I installed the tubing there is no more oil coming from the weep hole in the inspection cover below the torque converter.

I thought about extending the blow by tube on my truck, just got lazy and never did it. Glad it worked for you. When I was using Rotella my truck stunk from oil change to oil change, and I was told the smell would go away after I got some miles on the oil. I wonder if it was because I have the FS-2500 oil by pass filter on the truck and its just doing it job keeping the oil fresh or am I having a tarded moment? #ad
