So I have noticed an oil odor coming from my new '06 that is only noticeable when I park the truck and open the door before shutdown as it is idling. Now I have noticed this odor quite frequently on my '98 12v when I have just been after cruising around on a fresh oil change and going to park the truck as it is idling I can get a good wiff of the oil odor coming from the blow-by tube, almost smells like burning oil. Now I am occasionally getting that same scent from my '06 and I was wondering if ayone else has noticed this since obtaining their new truck?? The truck is not leaking oil anywhere, no drips on the ground nor any spray on the under carriage. Obviously the oil is still new being I have only 840 miles on the truck so far, so I am thinking this is just cuz the oil is still breaking in and I am seeing the same thing that my '98 does.

Anyone else getting this odor??

Thanks, Joe

I crawled all over my new '06 yesterday evening for the exact same reason. . Smells like some oil is baking off of something right when I get out of the truck after shutdown or during idle. &00 miles on the truck, cant find any leaks. . It seems to be happening less frequently now but it still has me a touch confused as to the source.

It's the new diesel smell from the factory. :-laf This is normal, I still get that smell even after 70k. Its the new oil that smells funny, I get the smell when I am sitting a a traffic light and have the vent on. As the oil gets older the smell will go away, but as soon as you change the oil the smell will be back.

I like the smell, it reminds me of when the truck was new :D

All the trucks do this to a certain degree. You can add mopar part # 5139947aa ( Diesel fresh) to the crankcase and the smell will change to a greasy lemon scent.

It's the crankcase breather tube, the smell will always be there to some extent but is most noticable right after an oil change. You will learn to love it, at least I did. :D

Thanks to all for this info, now I feel better. I noticed a new smell recently and didn't associate it with my recent oil change (Chevron Delo400).

Thanks guys, yeah, my '98 did it too right after an fresh oil change so I guess this is normal for all 5. 9s to have that distinct odor from the crank vent tube. Good to know everyone else is smelling the oil as well. I think I'll pass on that lemon scented stuff, not sure I would like to know how lemon/oil smell together. :-laf

My wife uses lemon oil on the wood work. I didn't realize I could make it for her!

Also the 6. 7 will not have this smell as the crankcase is going to a closed system.

some trucks are worse than others, and the problem is worse on 06 trucks. Its a definate problem. The smell can get pretty bad. It got so bad on one of my 06 trucks that i ran the blow by tube up over and into the air cleaner box to get the fumes out. Its not the best thing to do, but never smelled the burnt oil again. I think it has to do with a new valve cover/ breather assembly on the 06 and the oil jets cooling the piston.

My 06 did it for the first 300 miles then it went away even after an oil change.

First I was upset then I got to like it and missed it when it went away.

There are several threads on how to seal the engine compartment from the ventilation system. I did mine, and it completely got rid of the smell. I also zip tie a thick sock folded inside itself on the end of the vent tube every oil change. That stopped the air filter from getting black oil fumes on it. It is hard to see, but the vent tube coats the whole engine compartment with oil particles over time. This way I get one final use from my holey socks.

Jeez, Reb, makin' it sound like it is a problem that will eventually effect performance and reliablility. :-laf J/K

I don't mind it at all just thought it was weird getting that same smell from a brand new truck.

well we need to find out why its does this. is the oil burning? is it a faulty vent? My 06 didn't do it until the first time it was driven hard and then would not stop smelling bad.

I hear ya Reb, but my '98 12v has done it from day one right after a fresh oil change as well. I think it is just the smell of the vapor coming out the crank case. All the moisture, if any, is just steaming out of the oil and I think that is maybe what causes it... ... although, why it only does it when the oil is just changed and goes away after a few hundred miles... . I have no idea.

I am having a similar problem on my 06 except that after my last oil change it sometimes leaves an oil spot in my driveway under the tube. This morning the spot was about the size of a dinner plate and there is obvious oil residue around the end of the tube. This doesn't seem normal for a truck with 14,000 miles on it.

My brother and I had the same thing on both of our 07's. Drove me nuts. Now have about 1100 miles on mine and it is gone for the most part.

Same problem

I also have an 06 2500 sometimes the smell gets pritty bad luckly on oil on the Garage Floor. the dealer says cant find problem. keep us posted.

i am going to try a Symthetic oil to see if it helps.
