Was changing oil today and noticed a thick oil and dirt film collecting on the torque converter access cover and front of my 48RE. Looks like its been building up for a few thousand miles atleast. Curious I didn't notice it at last oil change about 3K ago, but it might have been less obvious. Recently had a transmission full service done at a local dealer. ( I know. )

Getting ready for a cross country tow this summer and can't afford any problems. Hoping you guys can help me narrow down the possible causes of this oil leak. (It doesn't drip on my garage floor, yet :-laf )

Only have 34K on it, so hope this is covered under my waranty

All advice and experiences welcome.

Thanx,

Joe

If it is the Blowby hose, just extend it about 6 inches and your problems will be over.

Just for the record my last three CTD's have done this and extending the hose has always been the fix.

Hope this helps ya.

please tell me what is a CTD'S. There are too many acronymns used here half the time I don't know what people are saying???

Cummins Turbo Diesel's CTD'S

Blow-by

Another thing to consider is the transmission over flow which is located in the bellhousing behind the torque converter. If the transmission is filled to full, it will puke the excess out this overflow and run down onto the inspection cover.

Its the trans overflow from probably being too full, should be no problem. Spray it down with some cleaner and keep an eye on it.

I've had mine back from those idiots at the dealership for about a week. My T/C inspection cover was wet from oil, but not dripping. Also the back of the oil pan was wet from oil. I thought it was a rear mail. They changed the oil pan gasket and that seems to have fixed it(for now).

They also changed the trans gear selector shaft seal and the transmission pan gasket at the same time.

The "Tech" over filled my crank case and my tanns. But what really ****** me off was I gave them 3 gallons of synthetic, but this rocket scientist wanted to add 1 qt. of conventional oil. for a grand total of 13 qts. Not gonna hurt anything, but its still stupid.

Mojavejoe - on my truck, the blowby tube gets the back of the front diff oily, it doesn't get as far back as the trans. I'd have the seals/gaskets inspected. At about 15k I had two seals replaced - xfer case and one trans seal due to small amounts of seepage.

Well mine does. It gets that far back. I added oil dye and used a black light. Was coming from blow-by tube. Not much on trans etc. Just some wetness.

What is the cause of all this blow-by oil coming out? I have it as well. I noticed it between the oil pan and the transmission as well. Then I saw the bottom of that tube was wet as well. I know my air filter is dirty and needs to be upgraded soon. Will a plugged air filter cause blow-by?
