12QTS is what a dry motor takes. You will never get that much out so a drain and refill with 12 QTS is overfilled. Between the oil that is held in the head and in the oil pan it's 1/3-1/2 qt on a well drained motor.

IIRC 6.7's have a TSB to allow them to drain for at least 30 minutes. I believe it came about from overfilled engines when the 6.7's came out, but it's been a while since I read about it.

Well, I have been running overfilled for 32K miles now. I drain until it basically stops dripping, and add 12 quarts with the filter. As I have said before mine shows right on the top of the safe zone," MAYBE" a 1/16 over

And you most likely could put someone else's dip stick in and get a slightly different reading. Or the same procedure on someone else's truck will get a slightly different result.

I can recall that some late fifties and early 60's Chrysler engines would throw out the top quart and replacing it resulted in the same thing. Leave it a quart low and it stayed there!

But do what works for you!!! As that is what I do!

Silly thread! My 2015 is many years down the line for the production of the 6.7 and they have not changed the manual.

My thoughts exactly, I recall ,it had to been late fifties ,early sixties, just getting into cars, and such :D I remember a car my dad had that would knock out a quart ,and then stay right there. don't remember which car.

But as far as the 12 quarts, I will continue with that, but yes this thread is silly. Its as silly as draining overnight if you think about it. I believe I did suggest to the OP to do that, but I don't let it drain much over what it takes to do the filter ( Thru the Fender :D ) Now if I did the filter thru the top, that would give me time to drain three trucks :-laf

Careful now, I like being on the top! SnoKing

Pour a third of a quart of something in a cake pan or something the size of the Cummins oil pan and see how far it raises the level. My guess is that it is not a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Snoking

Yes that is about how much I was overfull with adding 12 quarts on my 11. I just like to know where I am to start with. All my other rigs draining oil overnight and adding correct amount of oil they were all right on the full mark. I know it is not going to hurt a darn thing with 12 quarts and it's not going to hurt doing what I do.

I put in 12 at a (I buy by the gallon, so it's 3 gallons). Since I run an amsoil bypass filter in addition to a fleetguard or wix full flow, mine ends up at 1/2 to 2/3 the way up the safe zone. I'm fact it's always right at/after the "E" on "SAFE".

Then every week or two after it regens, it will go up about 1/16 of an inch. I guess gradual fuel dilution. I've never had the oil level go down. But it does creep up over time. When at the top.of the plastic, I know it's 1/2 quart to a quart over and needs changed.

If we figure the oil pan's inside dimensions at the upper oil level is roughly 29.5" X 10.5", then 1 quart would be roughly 3/16". That would make 1/3 quart = 1/16".

If it's down on the ramp, all bets are off.

Look at 6:00 mins on this video and see how much (big as$ oil pick up and curved bottom of engine) sticks down below the flange where the oil pan mounts.

Sorry to throw a wrench at your calcs.

I never measured the 1/16 inch. Just guessing because mine always gradually makes oil (volume) as it regens. Itvwill stay constant for a while, then go up and stay constant agsin. See video below @ 6:00 mins

I never get more than 12.5 qts out. But there is probably 1/3 to 1/2 quart that won't dtain.
