Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Oil pan Gasket

Does anyone know if the oil level (with engine off) is below or above the oil pan gasket. Also to those who have replaced the pan gasket, how difficult and time consuming is it. Thanks Bill

The top of the fluid level will be above the gasket.

Change the gasket is relatively easy. The factory service manual contains complete details.

Since I knew that the crankshaft is almost a half inch below the oil pan flange that just didn't sound right. If true the crank would be whipping the oil to a froth. So I took a pan off an engine that I have in the garage and measured water into it. Since I know that there are those who pour in the full three gallons so as not to have to mess with a spare qt, I poured in three gallons. The water level was a full inch below the oil pan flange.



The FSM will tell you to remove the transmission. I found that you do not have to.

Make sure your oil leak is pan gasket related. Any leak in front will blow all over the pan and leaks above it will run down on it and make it look like the pan is leaking.

Thanks for the replies. I am in the process of degreasing to make sure it is the pan gasket thats leaking. I agree it could be from above and running down. About five years ago the pan gasket was leaking. I simply tightened all the pan bolts ( got a quarter to half a turn on all of them) and the pan has stayed dry for the last five years. Then a few months ago it started dripping again. I degreased the pan about a week ago and by the time I got back under the truck everything was wet again so the source was impossible to determine. I need to degrease again and check it every day to see where it is getting wet first. Thanks Bill

Be sure to torque the bolts correctly, getting them too tight will warp the pan and it will always leak. 18 ft/lb
