Heres the sad story. My used (see Sig) has a bad oil leak coming from the gasket between the gear case and the block at about the 5 oclock position. I have an appointment with a Cummins shop this coming Thursday. My question is, the oil pan was replace due to an accident from previous owner. When replaced they used RTV. Is it possible for excess RTV to break off and clog the oil pump. Also do you think the Cummins shop will pull the engine to do the gear case work?? I f so than I think I want the oil pan done just fo piece of mind. Any replies greatly appreciated. :( :(

I would doubt the RTV would clog your Gear driven oil pump.

If a big chunk got in there, your oil pump would mince it up in seconds.

The RTV is ok on your pan gasket and will not hurt anything (in my opinion) but for your piece of mind, changing the pan gasket

will not hurt.

Pulling the engine is their call, I would talk to the Cummins staff.

I would bet that they pull the radiator, intercooler, and air conditioner condensor to get to the front of the engine. I know of one case where that job was performed and that's what the shop did. They didn't remove the pan, just re-sealed the front area. If I recall correctly, the job shows about 10 or12 hours in the flat rate book. $$$$

Yeah I was counting on about $1500, still cheaper than a new engine I will see what they say about the pan. Is there a screen on the oil pick up that could get clogged with rtv?

A screen is present on the oil sump/suction tube on the 24 valve engine, im sure its present on the 12v.

I dont think it would be clogged but, maybe blocked during operation (if something came loose during operation), but oil pressure would be affected.

The oil pump pickup tube screen is about 3" in diameter, it would take quite a bit of ATV to block it off. Like jwilliams said your oil pressure will also be low.
