Just changed oil on truck and at 60000 miles the oil pan is leaking. Noticed a film of oil on it at last oil change so I been watching it. This oil change it had more of a film under there. A drip on flywheel cover. No drips on garage floor. I checked the bolts on oil pan. The ones from about the center to rear were loose. I turned them a good turn or a little more. Book says they are torqued at 18 lbs. Start in the middle and work out. So I will watch it and see if this stops it or if the gasket has to be replaced. Looking in the shop manual it looks like its a pan in a** to replace the gasket. Surely you don't have to take everything off they are telling you too. Anybody done there own yet?

Is it broke in? Where is the leak? It sounds like it is at the back of the oil pan. Does the leak extend up each side of the oil pan about a third of the way towards the front? There is a TSB out for this. You also could have oil pan bolts vibrating loose. I've experienced this. Just re-torque the bolts and that may solve your problem. I'll try to find the TSB for you.

Replaced oil pan

Mine truck has been leaking for the last 20k. The dealer has replaced rear main seal for the third time. This time in they replaced rear main seal and oil pan. It appeared to be leaking from the gasket, but also the plug, which was tight. Anyway, they replaced the pan and the leak has stopped.

I retighten the bolts on the oil pan to 18lbs. Put about 150 miles on it on the highway and nothing is leaking yet.

Had the same leak

at about 25k. Just retightend the oil pan bolts been OK up to 30k. It's a good idea to go over these truck and check hardware from time to time. This old cummins is a shaker but thats why we all love it!!!
