I just bought a 98 3500 4x4 24v w/ 6 speed that's been wrecked. The front diff has been rolled back and up into the oil pan, and poked a hole in it. I have thought about just using a dent puller to pull out the crease and then weld it up, but I know in my heart the right thing to do is to pull the pan and fix it.

My question is, has anybody sucessfully removed the oil pan in frame? I think if I unbolt and raise the motor, it MIGHT come, but it's gonna be close. Any ideas?

Buy a Service manual.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cables.

2. Raise Vehicle on hoist.

3. Remove transmission and transfer case.

4. Remove flywheel.

5. Disconnect start cables from starter motor.

6. Remove starter motor and transmission adapter plate assembly.

7. Remove oil pan bolts, break the pan to block seal, and lower pan slightly and remove oil suction tube fastners.

8. Remove oil and suction tube.

Thanks, PitBull

Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I appreciate your reply. It has 106k on the odo, so I might as well stick a new clutch in it while I'm there. Reckon?

I bought a 99 the front diff roll back and up on that one too, with the front diff. out I took the motor mounts out lifted it with a cherry picker, pulled the pan bolts. Once I got the pan down far enough to get the oil pick up tube out the pan came right out.

Got it done............

That worked for us, too. Banged the pan back out straight, and dumped the oil in it, fired right up. Sure runs smoother than my 12v. :D

Wow you don't mess around. Looks like the service manual way was not the easiest way. Glad it worked out for you.

I think.........

the key was that the front diff was removed. I don't know if there would be room to remove the pan if it was still in, but if I had to do it again, I would probably pull the front diff, instead of the trans/transfer case and all the rest of the stuff. Sure looks like it would be easier that way. Thanks again, PB.
