Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil pan removal without pulling transmission

Has anybody tried to replace the oil pan gasket without pulling the transmission? Is it possible. The service manual says you have to pull the transmission. I have a 98. 5 4x4 5 speed

I just got done pulling my oil pan. I have the grill out and the head off, all I had to do was losen the engine mount bolts and raise the motor, I had to get about 4" of clearens between the front cross member to remove the pan you will also have to clear the oil pickup tube that runs from the front to the back . I think you will have a hard time removing the pan if the motor and truck are complete. Good Luck

i just wanted to second jeff, we pulled the pan off a 97 (not mine) a few weeks ago and you just about have to pull them out, you dont have to but in order to get the pan to clear the pump and slide out over the crossmember you'll need about 4-5" of clearance. This is not any easy task, don't think this wont take long atleast a whole day.

Did one this past spring on a 95 2WD 5 speed dually. Remove fan shroud, motor mount pin bolts and disconnect turbo hoses at intercooler inlet and air horn. Raise and lower slowly. Have a friend watch top end for interferences. I lifted from below as that was the only option. Lifting from the top would have been safer and provided more room underneath for creepers.
