Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil pan removal?

Got a nasty oil leak from the pan and or front seal. Is it possible to drop the oil pan with out pulling the engine on an 01 4x4? It looks like the front cross member is pretty close to the pan and I wouldn't like to have another wrestling match. Last job that looked like this the brother in-law said "Sure, we can drop that front pumkin right out. " It was a 93 ranger with that stupid twin front axle setup. I still cuss him.



I'm gonna take the opportunity to replace the front seal and pan gasket, get the radiator and evap coil cleaned and hopefully drop in a cam.

You sure it is not oil from the breather bottle on the front of the engine? Do you still have the bottle? If so removing it and extend the hose down. SNOKING

I just had the pan gasket replaced under waranty. It was listed as an 8 hour job in the book. I believe you have to raise the engine up enough to clear the cross member.

You can do the front crankshaft seal without moving the engine.



I had mine done and did not know tht there is a seal kit that comes WITH A SLEEVE that is fitted onto the crankshaft for the seal to ride on. My crankshaft has a grouve worn in it from the seal.



I have to REDO mine $$$ or I will do it this time, right! I should have done it in the first place, but thought it was too big of a job and it has turned into 2 jobs.

What Snorkng said. I had oil all over the front of the engine and down the front and side of he pan, some drops hanging on the pan bolt heads. I removed the radiator to clean it and while there removed the 'bottle', Simple Greened the radiator, entire front of the engine, frame and everything, used a pressure washer to clean everything off. Emptied the bottle washed and cleaned. Put everything back and so for the whole front of everything is DRY and clean. I would sure look at the bottle thing first.

It is not too bad to get the pan out in the truck, but I would not do it unless I knew for sure where my oil leak was coming from. It is easiest if you loosen the engine mounts and tranmission mounts so you can raise it up about two inches for clearance. The other thing you have to do is take the oil pump pickup tube loose to be able to slide the pan out the back.
