Oil Pressure "Gage"

Yesterday I thought I found a source of free power. While waiting for the grid to warm up the air in the intake, i noticed the oil pressure was, oh, about 60 lbs... after starting and running a minute, the oil pressure fell well below zero ( oil vacuem??). AT this point a gong started gonging, and a red message showed up on the instruement panel telling me to "check gages"... yup, no "u". My neighbor helped me install his dignostic pressure guage which confirmed that my "gage" had bought the farm. is this a fairly common occurence? Should I save my pennies for a reliable after market guage? Who is the spelling instructor at DC, one of the German High Command?

OK guys... which brand of guages and where to put them. I know the options, would like some opinion and reasons therefore.
