Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil pressure gauge

Has anybody had a problem with there oil pressure gauge somtimes staying at 40 psi. Most of the time it works fine. I think it is the sending unit. I checked the connections. I just hope its not the ecm, because the sending unit goes thru there. :{

They can do some odd things. Mine dropped to zero with a chime & the check engine light comming on. It did it twice on sucessive days. Shutting down & restarting the engine reset it . I never got a good explination why, but it hasn't happened again in 9 months.

Im having the same trouble right now. My truck set off two codes. I was advised to have the oil pressure sending unit replaced. The mopar price is $213. 00, but the dealer said it was covered under the cummins warrenty. I posted a thread here and at 911 got alot of good advice at 911.

Mine is funky too. Started going out once in a while, got progressively worse, no set pattern to when or how often it will die, but most the time it won't work for 5 min or more. Seems to happen more after I refuel (moving fuel gauge) and using cruise control. I need to take the sender out and check it, possibly replace it.

My oil pressure guage has been b/o intermittantly for the past year or so. Drops to zero, chimes and sets code. I took the truck to dealer for warrentee lift pump replacement ( #@$%! CROWN DODGE, VENTURA,CA #@$%! ) Since the visit I noticed that oil pressure was rock solid and slighty higher than I had seen in the past. Wow! they fixed that also... ..... It even reads oil pressure with the keys on with engine not running! So they must have re-flashed my computer with the Dodge fix, "disable" so stupid consumer won't gripe. I spent 40K to buy a truck with gauges to have the dealership turn them off...

So now I guess I will have to replace that sender and hope it works. Rich

Mine oil pressure gauge dropped to zero when I was doing 50. I shut the truck down right away and called the dealer. They sent a tow truck out and picked the truck up it turned out to be just the sending unit. It scared the crap out of me when it happened. That was 102,000 mi ago and not a problem sence.

The standard fix is to reflash your PCM with upgraded code that tells you CPM to write 40PSI on the dash anytime your sender reports oil pressure out of spec. If they touched your truck you have the reflash. If you have any doubts, disconnect the wiring to the sender, if your dash chime sounds a warning and your check gauges light is on you are good. If the gauge says 40PSI (with the sender un hooked) you have the DC fix-a-flash and you have no oil pressure waring system. DC messed up my truck permanently. DC really sucks.

Install new oil pressure switch this weekend and all is good so far. Hope that was the problem. Also installed Rips 4 inch diamond eye exhaust, easy install and sounds great, great exhaust for the money.

How about a part number on that switch.

Cummins has a superseded part that includes a harness and requires the reflash.

The part number is 4088390NX It costs around $70. 00 and has a $30. 00 core charge. I picked this up from Cummins and works perfect. Have a 1999 if that makes a difference.

the OEM oil pressure gauge is a BIG JOKE !!!



i installed an autometer mechanical gauge a while back... because my oem gauge was doing strange stuff...



my oem gauge would drop to zero once in a great while... it has done that once since i installed the mech. gauge... it was rock steady at 40 psi on the mech. and zero on the OEM...

New Sender! All is well!

I purchased the new sensor P/N 4088390 from Cummins Southern Plains.

It cost $72. xx with no core charge.

The guage is working perfectly!!!!



Note: I had already purchased the "replacement sender and harness", but after reading about the reflash I chose to forego that method and try this sender.
