Do the 12v engines have seperate sending units for the oil pressure gauge and idiot light?

Recently my oil pressure gauge stopped working and was reading 0psi and the idiot light didn't illuminate... (light does illuminate at key on, start-up)

I replaced the sending unit behind the power steering pump and all is good, just wondering about the light.

" The warning lamp side of the combination oil pressure switch/sending unit resistor coil is conntected to one side of the bulb". Power is supplied to the oil warning bulb and the other side is the resistor side. When resistance is high(high oil pressure) the bulb is off and when resistance is low(low oil pressure) the bulb is on.

If it works when the key is turned on it should work when the pressure is low/zero.

Your gauge is nothing more than a warning light. unfortunately, it's not a real gauge It isn't progressive. You either have pressure or you don't. That is why you never see fluctuations in the gauge.
