Hey GMG Are you replacing it because of a bad/no reading on your rig? If so theres a TSB out on it as mine went south last week (So signal) And replacing the sending unit Won't solve the issue. Its an actual Reflash (What isn't) of the programming in the ECM.

Intermittent loss of oil pressure sensor ouput voltage.

This bulletin applies to 2500/3500 diesels with engine serial number 56744083 to 56809910. The output voltage of the oil pressure sensor may intermittently dropout. This condition may cause the engine oil pressure gauge needle to erroneously indicate lower than actual oil pressure. A warning chime may sound and the “Check Gauges” lamp may illuminate. The Engine Control Module (ECM) software has been revised to address this condition. Replacing the oil pressure sensor will not correct this condition. <hr>

There is a TSB on this... . But many here feel that this is just a band-aid approach.

As it is, the computer alread takes the reading from the sender and if it is outside of norms, corrects it to be inside normal ranges... . only exception to this is on practically zero psi and you will get zero on the gauge... . I think DC is trying to get out of replacing bad units by widening the range before you get a check engine light... .

Point is this... . unless you are getting middle range readings on your gauge AND it varies due to rpm, temp, etc. ... I'd bet the sender is bad..... If your reading is right near the top... . and NEVER moves..... Goes to this just by turning on the key(engine not running)..... your computer is fooling you! Replace the sender!

I just did mine... . pressures went right back to what I had on day one!... . $80 or so from cummins..... try the cummins web site and look for service centers in your area... .

takes all of 5 mins to replace... . once you buy the sender... go get a socket to fit it... . the rest is a cake walk.

I put up with a bad reading (just below top mark) for almost a year before I got off my duff and replaced the sender... . my pressures now are what they should be!

Cakewalk?

THerman,

tell me your secret dude, I got the sender I'm still debating how I'm going to get the 1 1/4 socket in there with out leaving too much skin in the engine compartement! Assuming that the sender is located in the same spot, mine is a 98. 5.

Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks.

Directions for Cakewalk

BFC, I'm not sure where your location is, but on the 2001, it is located just below and aft of the ECM. This location puts it down low between the fuel filter and lift pump.

My secret is to lay on top of the engine. Then I can reach through all of the lines just aft of the intake horn. I put the socket on the sender by feel, then attached the ratchet. Since the sender uses an o-ring seal, just a few turns get it finger tight. Disconnect the ratchet, and turn the socket by hand.

Start the new sender by hand, then use the socket only, then the ratchet... .

OH, and wear a long sleaved jacket!

I did mine last week during the 23F days we had here... . Outside!! I let the engine cool for 20min then went to work... . the engine kept me warm, and the rest wasn't too hot to touch!

I replaced the lift pump, Inlet Air temp sensor, and oil pressure sender (all for the first time) in under an hour... .

The temperature gave me a good incentive!

I was worried about that when I changed it... . Not enought to put a pan down... but I was worrying.

But there was no oil leakage when I removed the sender...

I think you'll be ok as long as you turn the engine off first!:--)
