How many of these does one have to replace before you just say to heck with it and ignore the red light and buzzer!! I am at 80K on my 98 12 valve #3 sender has failed as the rest did. . where is this thing located?? and is there any good replacements out there stealer has done my each time for a very nice hefty price. . I figure as much as I hate to wrench on things I may as well learn where and how to fix this pain in the A"" thing. Has anyone bypassed the electronic gage and just installed a real Unit somewhere in plain site??Thanks in advance for any and all help ideas etc. . Patrick
 
It`s not that hard to change out yourself. It`s located just back from the Power steering pump. Getting the wire harness plug off the sender is the hardest part of the job. NAPA prices vary from State to State, The Sender was $26 bucks in Nevada and the 1@1/8 deep socket was $9 bucks.

I would not run long with it not working. On the way to May Madness this year, the friend I was running with had his quit working. We kept going and what ever broke inside the sender started leaking oil out the wire harness plug and before we knew it he had lost a gallon of oil. Man what a mess that was.
 
Thanks for the info I guess a fellow should buy a couple and keep the tools right in a handy spot. I presume the best way to reach this thing is from underneath the truck? Thanks again Patrick
 
It`s easier to do from the top. A Mirror is very helpful and makes it more fun. Don`t forget the Wire Harness plug has a little clip that holds it to the Sender. With the Mirror you can see it, just lift the tab and pull.
 
ata- do you have the NAPA part # for the sender? I tried to get one @ my local NAPA & they couldn't find a listing for it. :confused:
 
My Napa cant find the part either. But I frankly am not interested in replacing electronic junk I am hopefull someone has bypassed the electronic part of this gauge and put a real gauge in. I am confident this can be accomplished But HOW? anyone please I need to do something fairly soon Thanks in advance. :)
 
That's great Bill, but were talking oil pressure senders. :rolleyes:



I dont know whats going on with Napa. It used to be a place that I could call, and I'd get someone that knew what I was talking about. Latley the local branches have all been going under. :(

NAPA #

I have a 96 so numbers may be different with other trucks, but this is the # of the sending unit that I bought from NAPA. OP6670 and the deep socket you need to remove it is, KD3458, I bought it at NAPA also, hope this helps.
 
Thanks Ron I was going to have to E-Mail you to bail me out here. Boy I guess you were Lucky at Tonopah Nev. that those girls knew what they were doing with the parts Numbers.
 
Throttle Linkage Recall

The recall is for 1997-98 trucks. The recall # is B15. Dealer said there was a 10 day backup on getting throttle parts.

95 OIL PRESSURE SENDER

DO YOU KNOW IF THE NAPA PART#06670 IS GOOD FOR MY 95?I DON'T WANT TO GO NEAR A DEALER, THEY SAY THAT THEY NEVER HEARD OF A SENDER GOING BAD. THANKS.
 
My Napa Parts peaple have no idea how to help me with this Part I have decided to let it go and hope for the best. the dealer I try to avoid says the senders go out Alot. So Why keep manufacturing crap that fails. Hey CUMMINS as a stock holder I expect quality including all things that Indicate the well being of your Wonderful Products!!as in Oil pressure senders that WORK and dont fail every 30K or so. This whole situation stinks Bad. welcome to Our disposable economy huh. . No harm meant here to anyone or any entity Patrick:)
 
More on my sending unit

Here is a thread that I absent-mindedly posted in the over valved section awhile back. Some of you may fine something in it you can use. sorry I don't know how to put just the address on this, but I know how to copy and paste, so here it is.



Oil sending unit



Has anyone else out there had their oil pressure sending unit fail? This is what I learned and what I have done to not be caught in the middle of no where with oil running out of my engine.

On the way to May Madness in the mountains of Oregon my oil pressure gauge dropped to zero. Didn't freeze up or start knocking (no louder than usual) so I determined that it was the pressure- sending unit. I can live without that for awhile, anyway till I get to Pahramph and buy a new one.



A few miles North of Tonapah, Nv. oil started leaking out of engine. I lost a gallon before we caught it. The failed pressure switch failed just a little bit more by rupturing the internal diaphragm and letting oil out through the wire plug.



I was in luck, there was a NAPA parts store in Tonapah. They also had the pressure switch for around $28, NAPA part # OP 6670. To change the switch you have to have a very deep 1-1/16" socket. I was in luck again; they had one for about $10. It is part # KD3458. This is the size that fits my ’96, other years may be different.



Now for you adventuresome guys out there like Earthromer, I would suggest that you carry a little insurance in your toolbox. You don't need to buy a new socket or sending unit. This one may have been one in 500,000, but it can ruin your day if it takes your engine out. If you have access to a lathe just hog out the inside of a 1-1/16" deep socket to the depth of 2-3/4". This will allow it to fit over the long sending unit, or you can spend the ten bucks for a new socket at NAPA.



Now you have the sending unit out all you need is a 1/8" NPT pipe plug to plug the hole. This will now keep the oil inside your engine where it belongs till you can get a new unit.

The location is under the injector pump, and not real handy so I made up my spare pipe plug with a two-inch long nipple with a coupling and the plug screwed together. I filed the square end of the plug till a small socket will fit to help install it.

Sorry for the long post, but if it keeps one of you out of trouble it is worth the long read, but you have to do your part by making up your little insurance kit.
 
Oil Pressure sending unit R&R

I have been putting up with a fuctuating oil pressure gauge for about 4 months. After reading through the various postings on this thread, I had my local shop order me a sending unit $38. 00. With the new unit in hand, I drove 25 miles to the thriving metropolis of Winslow AZ and decided to start my search for the appropriate sized socket at my favorite pawn shop. I lucked out and found a slightly used one that fit the unit in my hand for $4. 00. The owner of the shop having dealt with me before felt obligated to show me a recently acquired new in the box Remington 1100 Left handed shot gun, (I'm a south paw) So I went home with a socket I needed and a shotgun I couldn't walk away from. After waiting for the engine to cool, I managed to disconnect the harness with no problems but the socket wouldnt go onto the old unit as a bracket on the underside of the injector pump was in the way,( It was the attachment point for the throttle return spring... or thats what it looks like to me) None of the threads mentioned this obstruction but a few turns with a 10mm wrench and I had the bracket off and all the room I need to complete the replacement.
