A friend of mine has a 2000 CTD. Almost every day while driving, there is a bell thay sounds and check gauges appears on dash. When this happens, the oil pressure gauge is on zero. A little bit down the road, oil pressure goes back up. The local dealer says he needs a sending unit, but wants $185 for it. Any ideas on where one could be purchased at a better price?

Get one at your local Cummins shop. I paid $69 for mine, all you need is a 32MM deep socket to change it.

This is for an 01 ... . $64. 70 from Cummins Metropower

HANDWRITTEN # 190709 <-----I have no idea what this means but it was written in marker on the box.

Worked for me no probs scince

Just had my 98' replaced at the dealer today under the 100k cummins warranty. Mine just stuck at no pressure and I did not know what it was. I did not want to take the chance, so I had it towed into the dealer. Took out my 'edge' computer first... . The dealer called and said the oil sending unit was bad and they replaced it under warranty. The dealer can be good for some things... .

Thanks for the input

He tried the dealer on the warranty, but they said no warranty on electrical parts,,There is a local Cummins dealer here so he can try there,,again thanks a lot

Do a search on the oil pressure sensor. I did mine a month ago and wrote a pretty long summation on it, the tools you need, parts etc. It's not bad but a pain none the less...

This is the first repair I ever had to do on my truck. It was pretty easy, just had to work by feel because of the location. Laying on top of the engine helps here... (also keeps you warm on a cold day!)

I've heard of dealers wanting to reflash for this (basically having the computer ignore the problem) I would also bet that the running pressure right now is just below the upper mark and does not move with rpm... . Another sign that the sender is shot... .

I will second what others have said here... . find a cummins shop and get the part there... get the socket needed (you'll have the new sender to measure it by) and do it yourself...

Time to get dirty!

When my oil pressure unit died, it read 0 all the time. You may not see the same indication for each failure. Some die and read 0, others die and read hi all the time. I think any reading out of the ordinary would be the true indicator.

oil pressure sending unit

2000 CTD s/b quad cab 2 wd. bought used at 23,000 miles

The 3 year bumper to bumper had timed out.

At 25400 I got the chime & check engine gages twice within

2 miles while on my lunch hour on a Friday afternoon.

Knowing full well that the crankcase was full (less than 3k on new

oil) I called Tempe Dodge, explained what happened.

The service advisor was sure that it was "electrical" or the sender.

(as was I) I was asked to bring it in first thing Monday morning.

The first thing I did Friday night was get to this website, where I

found that I was not alone. I went to the dealer

on Monday am, armed with Tech service bulletins & anecdotal

evidence of similar problems on other vehicles with engine s/n's

that did not meet the TSB'S. I told the service advisor that if

it was the "sending unit" and it was not to be covered under warrenty then I would buy the unit direct from Cummins and replace it myself. Tempe Dodge came thru with a new sending

unit & a re-flash at no charge under warranty.

Please note that the oil pressure gage still functions, plus and

minus 40. Oo.

Replaced sending unit...now limp mode?

I replaced sending unit last night, this morning I'm in limp mode and to add insult to injury the guage still does not read accurately. Any ideas? I tried reseating the connector already. How could replacing the unit put the truck into limp mode? TIA

Tom

It can't. Granted you had a bad sender and that's taken care of. The truck runs fine when it showes no pressure whatsoever so There's an underlying problem here. Have you seen

"no buS" in the mileage window recently? You still have a tach reading I assume or is it bouncy (Meaning more than a 500 rpm swing).

:EDIT: UNLESS you knocked the ECM connection loose whilst replacing the sender.

So does mine, I had the reflash too.

Go unplug the sender and post what pressure you see on the dash, bet it's 40 PSI. The reflash tells the PCM to ignor the sender if the pressure is bad.

Sending unit

Tool Man, thanks for the response. I put the old one back in last night, now no limp mode. Same reactions on the guage with either sender, all the way up or 0. Here is a question for you, when you pull the sending unit out, it is absolutely clean, i. e. no oil. I'd think it would have to come in contact with the oil to read pressure? Seriously thinking about taking it to the dealer, please talk me out of it.

Now that's a stumper No Limp with the old sender. Just to clarify "limp" is low power and I believe no lock up conditions allowed. Odd at best that the old sender improves the condition. Last oil change was how long ago? The reason I ask is yes that sender is indeed in an oil passage (Hence the o~Ring) and is in contact! If it's clean that to me sounds like an oil issue. It sounds crazy and I am sure you have checked the level but what oil filter are you using? Frams and I want to say Wix (May be wrong on wix) have had a few issues with the construction of the internal oil bypass valve sticking open inside the filters. Something does not add up.

Fleetguard filters, every 3000mi. , I'll change the oil and filter this weekend on the odd chance the filter has an obstruction of some kind. Is there an EASY way to manually check oil pressure? Like the Briar Hopper fuel pressure guage. I think a trip to NAPA is in order. Thanks for the ideas.

STUPID!

Boy do I feel DUMB. I had replaced a sensor higher up on the engine, maybe the IAT, I really don't know, there is another sending unit thread floating around that suggests I replaced the wrong unit. Now that I replaced the right one, everything works the way its suppose to. By the way the sensor/sending units look absolutely identical. I hope this helps someone in the future.

Tom

Whew Tom Ya had me stumped but come to think of it I was kinda wondering if you had the right sender in the beginning ... ... Especially when no oil was present! Oh well glad ya found it!

Hey Tom, don't feel bad- I made a similar mistake too. The IAT sensor is high up on the crankcase towards the rear of the block. The Oil Pressure sender is tucked away behind and below the ECM and Fuel Filter assembly and somewhat awkward to reach  Mine went belly up at 39,020 miles just outside Brussels in Europe last week and I'm now waiting on a replacement from the USA. The service manual has some pretty good diagrams to help you identify and locate the relative positions of each of the sensors and it's well worthwhile familiarising yourself with their positions for future reference at your leisure rather than under "emergency" conditions. The sevice manual should set you back no more than US$120 posted to your door.

stupid

A manual would have saved me time and a headache, but at least I don't have to get my parts from across the Atlantic! Good luck. This is my 2nd time replacing this thing, truck has only 36,000mi. , dealer did it the first time, but now all they want to do is reflash. There is an updated part number on the sending unit #4088390, I paid $69. Thanks again for all the support, I have no doubt I'll need it again, next time I'll have the manual.
