I heard this on another site, and just wanted a second opinion. A couple of guys were saying that the new dodge oil pressure guages are set to read 40 psi, whether or not the truck has that pressure. So if you are running high, or low or none, it will still read 40psi. Has anyone else heard this? Sorry if this topic has already been discussed a bunch.

Thanks,

Sean

That's almost true. The truth is that the oil pressure gauge from the factory is fake. The "sending unit" is a simple pressure switch that goes to open circuit at 6psi. As long as the pressure remains above 6psi, the ECM will make the oil pressure needle move "in accordance with customer expectations". This is done by a simple relationship between outside temperature, RPM, and water temperature.

The gauge doesn't read exactly "40" all the time. Rather, it will move around a little with changes in engine temperature and RPM. But it's all fake to make you think you're looking at engine oil pressure.

It's amazing how many people are fooled by the gauge and swear that their oil pressure is "higher after an oil change" or some such nonsense. The gauge really does "comply with customer expectations". ;)

Isn't that nuts? Instead of just giving us a REAL gauge, for something as important as oil pressure, they go through the trouble of making it a fake. They still have to make a guage, still have a sending unit, and on top of that they have to pay somebody to write enough code into the ECM to make it appear to be a real gauge. That and the horn blowing when hooking up a trailer have to be two of the most misguided stupid pieces of busybodyism I have ever seen a car company engage in.

Yeah, I don't care what customers want to see, I want to know how my truck is operating. So what if my oil press. isn't the same as the next guys, as long as I can know what is normal for MY truck, then I can tell if I have a problem.
