Oil Pressure

Please excuse new member bobble, I posted this previously in error under another post regarding oil filter half full or half empty.

I would appreciate feedback as to why oil pressure is delayed several seconds in coming up to normal on guage of 2001HO. I have talked with several other truck owners and they all say theirs does the same thing. What is normal in the way of seconds and why the delay? I was a Power Stroke owner and am now a Cummins owner. There was only maybe 1 second or less delay on the Power Stroke. My Cummins has up to 5 seconds delay. I would just like to know the rest of the story.

3-5 seconds sounds about right. I think that is covered in the owners manual. It takes the computer that long to determine an oil pressure reading, I am sure oil pressure builds much more quickly than the gauge indicates. Still causes a mild pucker after every oil change.

It is my understanding that the factory gauges are fed info via the computer rather than the sender itself. The computer is just taking its sweet time to send the appropriate voltage to the gauge. I believe that the pressure in the Cummins is developed much faster than is indicated.

It is totally normal, and yes, oil pressure is developed MUCH faster then the gauge indicates. I removed the oil pressure fitting and put a mechanical gauge in its place and started the truck and oil pressure was almost instantaneous. Nothing to worry about, the computer delays to just to mess with your head
