I have a 91. 5 with 170k miles and I am concerned with the oil pressure, the stock guage reads between the low line and the first line. Sometimes it reads in the normal ranges, but not all the time. At start up the guage reads at about the third line from the left, then falls after I drive awhile. I've owned the truck for four years now and love it. The truck runs fine and has plenty of oil. Also no unusual noises, just the right amount of clatter.

Hey matches,... .

Welcome to the homestead... . pull up a chair and make yourself at home... . read, read, read. . then ask whatever you need.....

Valve adjust may help the clatter, especially if you have not had it done recently/since you've owned it.

Also the oil pressure can read a tad low if you idle is too low... bring up the idle to about 750 RPM in "D" and with AC on...

i've been wondering can you take out the relief valve in the filter housing and stretch the spring out to get more pressure?. . mine is fine 50 lbs when hot etc. . but with the twins and p pump oil line i am adding i like a little more... any ideas?

thanks

check your sending unit and connection too, I have not had the problem but have read about lots of sending unit failures..... plug a mechanical gage in and se what your really getting before being too worried

My gauge was doing the exact same thing you describe. It would read normal sometimes and then it would read low (very low  ) sometimes.

This had me worried for a while until I replaced the sending unit and now she's reading right up in the center to slightly left of center with no fluctuations. Good peace of mind.

Thank You for youe replies. The valves were just adjusted at the dealer and the tech said they were in good shape, he also agreed to do my kdp. My volt guage is also jumpin' so I was going to check the grounds to see if they need help. By the way my truck has the 5spd with 4" exhuast and the guages, it runs really well but I will drop the bomb on it soon. I live close to diesel dynamics and I might have them do the work. I took a jacobs exhaust brake off when I did the new system, it's froze up but the solenoids and stuff are good if anybody wants it let me know the price is FREE.

The oil pressure gauge is a "virtual" guage and you don't see the fluctuations and depending on the condition of the gauge itself and the connections the readings some time do not reflect what is happening. The only way to check pressure for sure is put a mechanical gauge on it and relate that to the postion of your electric one then wathc for deviations. The sensor you buy will make a difference in what it reads also. My original read different from the Echlin replacement which read different from DC replacement. Changing the turbo affected the gauge reading also as the bigger one has better oiling system. Stretching the spring seems to be a favorite trick to increase oil pressure but if there is wear its just a stopgap measure.
