Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Oil puddle bigger than normal.

Last Friday I sat in traffic for over two hours. (God I love Phoenix) to go about 35 miles. Anywayz the truck never got much over 190 or straight up and down. I kept a good eye on that and the transmission temp as well. Now for the problem, when I got home and shut her off after getting all my stuff out of the truck I noticed quite a bit of oil on the ground right by the front diff and blowby tube.



I did not drive her on Saturday or Sunday. This morning on the way to work and all day (about 3 different sites) nothing. When I got home tonight after not such stiff traffic there it was again. What should I look for. Is it bad. Truck has about 325k on her and it is starting to make a mess in my driveway.

P. S. I have had this truck since about 240k and she has not used more than a quart an oil change which is about every 10k running Schaeffer 7000 15-40

Travis it could be caused by your vacuum pump. I hear if there's a leak in the system causing it to draw more air, or the pump itself, it will increase blowby considerably and increase oil usage. Reason is it vents into the crankcase.



My '96 goes through phases where it leaves a decent size spot after parking, sometimes no drips at all. I'm about 50k ahead of ya.

It might be just coincidence but heres my story. Got caught in the worst traffic of my life... . Driving home from New Jersey, we were on the loop arround Washington. Friday evening,Halloween. Big log jam. Couple hours at least. Stopped near Knoxville for the night. Next morning,big oil puddle arround front end. Checked arround for leaks ,nothing obvious. Drove about an hour and oil pressure dropped... . Oil every where... All the way to bumper. Blew it out the dipstick tube. Filled it back up and limped home arround 60 mph so it wouldn't puke.

Cummins did blowby test and checked turbo. Way over specs. The verdict was a dusted engine. I was skeptical... . I have the oil tested every 10k miles and never had an idication of high silicon or iron. It was blowing, but it wasn't from rings.

Pulled the head for a good look@210k miles. (needed to anyway for an external water leak) I couldn't see anything wrong with the gasket other than the water section. Had a ace mechanic look too. He saw nothing . Changed the valve stem seals and head gasket, ground the valves. Problem gone. Oh well. Sometimes you're just lucky I guess.

Wow only two hours? Man last fall when I tried to drive the loop around DC with my truck & camper it took me over 3 friggin hours I swear DC has THE WORST traffic I've ever experienced in my life! It was Friday, but it was before noon! All the road construction on the south side didn't help matters. And that happened the day after getting trapped in absolute gridlock near the Mall when they closed it off for an American Cancer Society march. Took 90 minutes to get a mile



Anyway that was odd about your engine. Mine went through a short phase where it blew oil on the underside and back of the truck, then quit doing it
