Help I'm putting my 00 cummins back together, just got it all bolted in and fired no oil pressure? Any ideas on what could cause this I'm at whits end Thanks in advance

Did you pack the oil pump with grease or anything else that would help it prime? If you forgot to do something like that, there is a trick that works. You have to overfill the oil so that the level is higher than the oil pump. In a gas engine that usually means adding twice the normal amount of oil. Only run it long enough to get oil pressure, then drain it and add the correct amount. If you did prime the pump, you might have something else wrong. Hope you don't have to take it apart again.

When you say back together, how far did you have it torn down? Did you forget to put the oil galley plug in the front of the engine behind the cam? what about the one under the side cover?

It spun #2 rod bearing. I removed all parts, had the block hot tanked and flushed, turned the crank and reassembled. I did not remove any galley plugs. Right now I have removed the front cover and oil pump to check for anything obvious. Is there a gasket/o-ring on the pump.

If some one else "hot tanked" the block maybe they took the galley plugs out or maybe the oil pump gear has spun on the shaft, cracked/broken pick up tube? Most times you can get oil pressure just by cranking over with out starting. There is not a gasket or O ring to seal oil pump.

If you had the oil filter/cooler assembly off, and the gaskets aren't in the right position, you won't have oil pressure.

If you had the engine apart and cleaned, the oil galley plugs should have been removed. There is no way to get all that metal out without removing them. If they weren't, all this will go through the new bearings and could possibly plug a piston cooler jet. Always replace the oil pickup after a mess such as this. Don't know about a gasket on the pump but there is one on the pickup. I have one in the shop partially torn apart, I will remove the pump tomorrow and see if it has a gasket. Think I would check with the machine shop about the plugs, too.

I found out today the machine shop did replace the galley plugs when they hot tanked, but there is two holes in the suction side of the of the oil pump one from the pickup and the other going straight back. I put a hose in this smaller hole going back and can blow air in with no resistance, this I think is why the pump isn't priming but I don't know what is missing or wrong. Any ideas. Does anyone have a diagram of oil passages in the block. The book I have has a diagram just for the oil cooler and main oil galleys on the pressure side.
