how often, or how common is it to have an oil pump go out?? i found another 92 3/4 ton for 750 bucks, the guy said the oil pressure went to zero and the engine was starting to rock and jump . was going to use it for a parts donor, but it only has 160,000 on her... . is it worth the pump trial? thanks, monte

If it were me I'd grab it up. Verify the oil pressure problem and if need be pull the pan and check out the inerds. If the engine didn't get damaged and you replace the pump you've got a cheap truck.

It is NOT normal to have a real oil pressue problem at that mileage. Verify the pressure with a mechanical gage and buy the truck.

thanks guys... i was a little concerned, however, this old guy is honest, and said he shut it off as soon as it started to lose pressure... i will keep you informed..... thanks, monte

The oil pressure sender units that Chrysler put on these B Series Cummins would not hold up. They frequently failed at 150,000 to 200,000 miles - I have replaced mine once with an improved version from Chrysler and it seems to be holding up better. It is quite unnerving to be running down the interstate at 75 mph and watch your oil pressure drop to 0 and have the idiot light come on . . . . .

Wow $750!! I would go look at it and take a 100psi mechanical oil pressure gauge and tubing with you, hook it up at the oil filter adaptor and verify oil pressure. Unless this is how the current owner verified it. Either way, for the price, sounds like a deal!

Oh, Bill, will you wipe the drool off your mouth? ;) :-laf I got my 92 for a whopping $50 more, and DROVE it 800mi home.

If the rest of the truck is in livable shape, I'd jump on it.

i will check the truck out this weekend on sunday. . i have to watch the young tanner run sat in regional track, then we will pressure gauge it and see... i went ahead and bought a new pump for 70. 00 (includes shipping)... prices were pretty messy down here. . 70 to 384. 00. . i think i have located a place that everyone else gets them from... . i love to chop block the middle man... ... if you need the place , let me know. . monte

its a kind of a sickness!!!!!

sorry for the delay getting back to the crew. . here is the update... the oil pump was cracked on the housing. . after a quick search in the oil pan, i discovered a screw(same size as the screws on the gear housing cover) and it was chewed up pretty good... no idea where it came from, however, you can put the puzzle together and see where it got caught between the 2 gears in the oil pump, and snap!!!!! anyway, she runs like a dream... i wouldnt call her a cream puff, but not a bad dailey driver. . thanks for the advice... . and the FFA boys are still amazed at the 1st generation trucks!!! monte
