This may soud like a dumb question but I am planning to

service my truck and I am curious as to were I should take my

oil sample ? Should I just take it from the bottom of the pan as

I drain the oil or should I try to obtain it from another location,

or does it matter? Thanks in advance DOC

I take a sample when I drain the oil. I try to drain the oil after I've run the truck for a while so the sample is warm and the junk in it is mixed around.

When I drain the oil, I try to take a sample from the middle of the drain out of a good steady stream of oil.

Clean, cheap way with all parts from the hardware store. Buy an 1/8" NPT X 1/4" compression valve, a 1/8"X3" nipple and 3' of 1/4"tubing, cost you less than $10. With the engine off but warmed up connect this setup to the plugged 1/8" port on top of your oil filter housing, hand tight no teflon tape is fine. Start the engine, open the valve and run oil though the tubing into your oil fill spout to flush it out for awhile. You can now take a sample with great control with the sample being the only loss of oil. Shut down the engine, open the 1/8 valve to let oil in the tubing drain back then remove it and replace the plug. If you like leave the valve in place and just remove the tubing.

Sure beats the mess taking a sample from the drain plug and allows you to take a sample without draining the oil if you're into extended oil changes.
