Got my oil sample results for my 89, silicon was high, only about 2,000 miles on the oil. During which my BHAF fell of a few times maybe a total of 200 miles with no filter. Had installed intercooler and new turbo. While the intake man plate was off, I tried to keep all the gasket material out of the intake, I'm sure a bunch got in, possibly indicated from silicone levels high from no filter, and gasket material. . 5 fuel in oil, less than average. What ya's think, also I hope I can post the results. Might have to type them out...

We too draw samples on Cat iron, and we almost always associate silcon to dirt entry. We will look for bad seals, air filter housings etc. I'll bet that most of the dirt/silcon like the sample explanation says is from your air filter being ineffective. Change the oil/filter, check the air filtration system and all air tubing, and then go again and resample. There might have been more stuff then you really knew of in the aftercooler you just installed. Your turbo wasn't rubbing on the compressor/exhaust housing was it? When installing the turbos I do generally you need to re-clock the housings, did you have to on your install?

Most likely you will be fine, just resample in another 2000 miles. The drawback to sampling now is you have no averages on the engine from the previous life.

So how does the ride run with aftercooler, and differnt turbo? Bunches better? Will I need to start finding the pieces for my 90? :-laf

Bill,

What was the silicon number (ppm)?

I had my brand new Cummins marine sampled at 75 hours... the end of the first season. Silicon was at 54 which is considered "critical".

At 300 hours it was 24... still high in the "abnormal" range.

I wrote to Cummins both times to try to document the results for future warantee issues should they arise.

Cummins' response was to tell me to but the OEM air filter (basically a BHAF)on the engine.

I replied that it was never off. Bear in mind this is a marine engine that never runs in dusty conditions.

Their response back was thay they do not take much stock in oil sample results to sustantiate warantee claims.

My interpertation? Cummins does not put a lot of faith in oil sample reports, and/or they are not overly concerned with high silicone levels.

(In my opinion it was due to sand not being thouroughly cleaned out of the castings. )

Take this for what it's worth... just my experience.

Sus Viscosity @212*f

Should be: 69-76. Tested: 77. 9

Flashpoint *f

Should be: >415. Tested: 410

Should be <2%. Tested: 0. 5%

Antifreeze %

Should be 0%. Tested: 0%

Water %

Should be <0. 1%. Tested: 0%

Insolubles%

Should be <0. 8%. Tested: 0. 5%

Well I show high levels of silicone, calcium, phosporus, and zinc. Did the sample during an oil change. Just wanted to see if any fuel and antifreeze was in it, and what kind of shape the motor is in and or tell how many miles are on it. Any of these values tell you guys anything?

Yes, they say a lot. What do you want to know?

Calcium is put in the oil. It's not from your engine.

Silicon; some engie oils use this. You'd have to pay to have your particular oil sampled when new to know for sure how much is sued if any. It also is a sign of a leak in the air intake system. Also, it's from contaminates from a new engine block. If you think you have a new engine that will run 6500 miles on it's "new" oil... ... ... ..... not. I wouldn't want to sample a new engine that was run 6500 miles with out an oil change. YIKES!!

Phosphorus, it's put into the oil from the place of manufacture

Zinc, same. Think of it as Rague tomato sauce... ... "it's in there"!!

Bill, your fine. Good shape. Just fix that intake leak or git a better quality filter.

My silicon is 9ppm after 6,000 mile run. aFe filter you know.

I find that the harder I run the engine the chromium level increases. Anyone else find this to be true?

Bill,

Do you have a legend on the back of the analysis that explains what the chemicals are?

Calcium is an oil additive

Phosphorus is an additive

Zinc is an additive

And like Scott said, silicone is sometimes an additive (anti-foam agent)

Think of an oil analysis as a single snapshot... put a bunch of them together and you'll have a bunch of pictures... . no... . you'll have a story.

Jay

Bill... If you don't have the legend e-mail me at my work address and I'll try to scan mine and send it.

Thanks guys for the input. They are sending me the paper copy of the report, I haven't got it yet, only an emailed copy of the front page of the report. I figure it be a good idea to start now with a sample, then continue sending them in each oil change, this way I will see trends. I used Chevron RPM 15w40, fleetguard filters, can't remember if it was a stratapore or microglass. I got the same oil in now, and a stratapore filter. Figured there could have been debrie in the 300k mile intercooler I installed, it sat for a year, with ends not covered. BHAF came off a few times, used a sander to remove the left over gasket on the intake with a shop rag stuffed into the intake, shop vac'd anything that got left behind. Yeah I know bad idea, cause I'm sure gasket material got in. They also said it contained alot of soot. During the 6 months/2,000miles of this oil's interval the truck sat for some time too. I'm wondering about the Chevron RPM, I get it free from my bro in laws shop, they put it in Prevost Coaches, Detroit 60 series non egr. It's free but would I be better off with Delo 400 or Mobil Delvac, which I have access to at work.
