I just bought a vac pump from blackstone labs. Is there any special procedure on using it. I figured I would just warm the engine like I normally would before an oil change and shut it off and take a sample. I read on the VW TDI forum that some people leave the engine running. I can't believe that is necessary.

I agree. Warm the oil and then shut down. Take your sample with the vacuum gun through the oil dipstick tube. It's also possible to install a small valve in the extra hole in the oil filter housing. Then you would take your sample with the engine running. I wouldn't put a hose down the dipstick tube with the engine running. Not only is it not necessary, but my luck is I would be the 1 in a million guy that gets the tube wrapped around the spinning crank.

AKaiser,

If your '05 is the same as my '01, then I'm going to guess that you get the tube most of the way in with maybe 2 inches left to go. There is something at the far end of the dipstick tube that provides resistance, but if you push is hard enough it will pass by and into the oil. Pull hard enough when done and the suction tube will come out.
