OK boys and girls I just got my report back on the oil sample ,and it's all greek to me. I would post it if I knew how . Could anyone tell me what I should be looking atOo.

fuel in oil low [0% ideal], low silicon numbers [high silicon is usually poor air filteration], low iron, lead, copper & aluminum are good signs too. . start getting high readings from those, and it usually is abnormal engine wear. a high tbn is good, low tan is good. the other values could be different depending on the oil you are running. .

last time i posted a sample reading, i just typed it out [time consuming]

Who are you getting to test your oil ?
There should be a brief statement telling you there opinions/recommendations , if not go to someone who will .
I've used Blackstone Labs , happy with there testing , but I'm switching to a local Cummins shop , about 1/3 the price with my discount .

I had it done through genos { horizon fluid analysis} . Here are some results you tell me if there any good.

Iron 74 magnesium 11

This is based on what I see running Rotalla @ 15,000 intervals >90% towing.

What was your change interval? How long did it take you to accumulate the miles during your OCI (oil change interval)? How many miles are on the truck? Did you tow much? Was the oil operated in cold temps? Do you use your truck for short trip intervals, which doesn't let the truck get up to operating temp? What percentage of your oil change interval is city -vs- highway driving? What was the TBN (total base number) of the oil?

Answer those questions and I'll be able to help you out a little. Your iron and copper readings are high, but nothing to be alarmed with.

When I was running Amsoil on 20,000 mile oil change intervals my iron numbers were usually in the 50s. I didn't have bypass, just used the Stratapore filter. That was on my 2001 HO.

Which Amsoil did you run, 5w30 or 15w40? Did you happen to use the new emissions-spec CJ-4?

Since you towed a lot of miles I'd say your numbers are fine, especially if you didn't run bypass. Hopefully you changed your oil filter at least once during that interval since 12,000 miles is a long stretch.

Vaughn,

I respect your posts, but I've ran Rotella 18,000+ miles, 100% towing, no filter changes and have never had Iron readings that high. Similar with Copper and some others.

Blackstone has done my samples since 100,000 something, and I'm now at 300,000.

The only thing I haven't set an example for is CJ-4, and I'm curious. The last 2 fills were CJ-4 and I wanted a sample on this dump, but I'm out of sample bottles and my truck is having Flux1's installed.

Forgot to add: I idle my truck 4-5-6, sometimes 8 hours with no fuel in the sample either.

Add this too: I run NAPA Gold filters as well.

JHardwick, what are your numbers typically when you sample? One thing that may help keep your numbers down is you probably do a lot of highway miles and have fewer shutdown/startups per 10,000 miles.

I've never done relatively long drains on dino so I dont' have anything to compare to. Might be fun to try sometime but I like my Amsoil ;)

Ben out of town so I lost contact with this tread. Arkapigdiesel I put 12,000 on the trip approx 7 towing and 5 highway and around town. We operated in the south no oil change on the 12,000 oil was in the truck 6mo

I just read the report from blackstone and am impressed. The sample i sent in I bought from Geno's and it's about as useful as tees on a bull. I even called and talked to a teck , all i wanted to know is if the oil is still good? And I got the runaround I don't advise anyone to use them. Blackstone for me the next time. A nice oil is still good or bad would have been nice.

No because i don't know wha a tbn test is. But I did ask if the oil was good or bad.

I always pay extra for the TBN test, but don't get caught up in the hooplah ... ... ... . Rotella will treat you right ... ... ..... 300,000 towing miles and still going @ 15,000 to 18,000 change intervals!

The TBN checks for additives , condition or is the oil usable still , or can you continue to use that oil .
I'm trying a Cummins lab this time , the TBN is included & costs less , so until I get the results back I'm not sure what I'll do next .
