getting ready to take my first oil sample since going to synthetics and extended drain intervals. It will be at 5K on the oil. I have a by pass filter and need to know if my sample should be taken before or after the oil goes through the by pass or does it not matter.

My thinking is that if I take it after the by pass the numbers may be skewed to show that the oil is in better shape than it really is and where it really counts, in the engine.

I could either use the by pass return line, in the filler cap to drawn my sample or use a sample pump to pump from the pan.

I may take two samples, one before and one after the filter and see how they compare, or whould this be a waste of money and time?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also where do you take your samples from? How? and Why?

Thanks

Pump from the pan... ... I believe this is a better as you stated. Taking it directly after the by-pass filter will definetly give you a skewed reading. Just my $. 02.

I was reading about this recently in an oil analysis magazine, they said it didn't matter if the sample was taken pre or post filter because analysis only measures particles smaller than 3 microns with majority of the readings coming from particles smaller than 1 micron. Main thing is to always draw the sample from the same place.

Thanks guys. I think that I will send in two samples for the first time, one from pan and the other from the return line and see which one is the "worst" of the two. I will then use that method in the future.

I'll post what I find, but it wont be for another month or so.

THanks
