If you have an oil bypass system, you can easily install a small valve/spigot to release a small amount of oil.

let me clarify, I am not sure where to extract the oil sample from, I was thinking of buying the drain valve that you can mount in place of the drain plug, what do you guys think ?

I bought a pump from AMSOIL for pulling my samples. You just put a plastic hose down the oil filler tube and suck it out. The sample bottles screw right into the pump and you just replace the line each time - no contamination to screw up the results. Works great.

JeffMagyar,

Get the Finger Touch drain valve from Geno's. Makes sampling and changing oil a breeze! No more worrying about overtightening the plug, replacing the gasket, etc. Just don't broadcast it that you have it on your truck.

I use the Amsoil oil suction pump to collect the sample from the oil pan, just be careful not to get the stuff on the bottom of the pan. If you are planning on changing the oil then you can get the sample when you pull the oil pan drain plug. You need to let some oil drain before collecting the sample to avoid collecting the contaminants off the bottom of the oil pan.

I just drop the drain plug and wait 'till it's flowing good and stick the Blackstone bottle under the stream. Works great, very easy. Are you looking to take a sample to decide if it's time to change the oil or just to check the condition of your engine/oil while you are changing it? My method is the one to use if you are changing the oil.

Dave.

Just a word to the wiser of us... let the sample cool before capping. Got a few samples back with "H2O" listed. Couldnt have been from condensation -no way #ad
soooo..... Now I let it cool before capping and shipping. VOLIA no more H2O!! And yes the finger drain is nice.

I want to have a sample analyzed so that I know whether I can run it for another 6 months or not.

If you are not running a bypass filter, then change your full-flow filter and pour the sample from that. If you ARE running a bypass filter, then the earlier suggestions sounded good!

HC,I've always heard it wasn't good to pour a sample from a filter, after all thats where all the crud is supposed to end up, right?

I did my first oil change a few months ago and I sent the oil to Blackstone Labs, just establish a baseline for my Cummins. The way that I took the sample is:

1. Loosen the drain plug until the oil starts to flow, but don't remove it, leave it there so the oil drains slowly.

2. Wait about a minute and then fill the sample bottle. This way you should not get any of the heavy contaminants that have settled to the bottom. I believe this way of sampling will get you results that indicate the true condition of the oil.

3. To maintain consistency, do it this way each time you want to sample your oil when you change it.

4. This method is only good for complete change outs of the oil. If you do not want to change the oil, but simply want to know the level of contamination, you need to find another way.

5. Most heavy equipment and some trucks have an oil sample point just for the purpose of obtaining a sample for analysis.

At 16 bucks a pop for a sample, I would just change my oil every 3 or 4 thousand miles. It costs about $30 for the oil and the Fleetguard filter.

Just my humble opinion folks... ... .....
