Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) oil sending sensor replacement

I see that the oil sending sensor is leaking. I have 260,000 miles on the truck and it has never been replaced,how hard of a job is it.

Not too hard. It's easiest with a claw-foot open-end wrench and a long extension to reach in from the wheel well.



My '98 has a brass adapter between the sender and the block. If yours has one, install it first, then install the sender. If you try to install both at once, you may well split the adapter. I believe you should not use any thread treatment (goop or teflon); it's pipe thread and should seal without any.



If you have a Cummins dealer nearby, get the CPL # from the left side of the engine (on or near the timing case cover). With that, they can get the right part. I took a photo of it, enhanced it and keep it in my smartphone for those times I visit them on the motorobike or another vehicle.

I don't think you will find a brass adapter on your 97. You will need a sender socket for yours. Make sure you start it in with your hand so you will know it's not cross threaded. It's not really a fun job

I changed mine a few thousand miles ago, I didn't think it was difficult at all. Just hard to see. I agree with ata to start it by hand to make sure it doesn't cross thread. My '96 didn't have a brass adapter, screwed directly into the block. I ordered mine from Genos. I can't remember what size it was, just match it up when you get the new sending unit. Definitely took care of the left side oil drip.

If you're 400 miles into a 5000 mile trip you can change it in the Autozone parking lot with a pair of Channellocks. Thats what I did on my way to PRI last December. Takes @ five minutes.
