My new 2001 3500 HO (delivered 11-00) has an oil smell insside the cab every time I come to a stop. It smells like 90w gear oil? I kwow the transmission is not filled with 90w but it smells just like. The smell is worse when I pull off the freeway and come to a stop on the off ramp.

I have the same truck, and the same problem. I notice it more within the first few hundred miles after a fresh oil change. I'm CERTAIN I'm not spilling any oil anywhere, and never had the problem with my '94. A buddy who has a '98 has the same **** problem. Anybody got any ideas?

I had the same smell when I first drove my truck, it went away after several hundred miles. I have since re-routed the crankcase breather bottle and now have no smell in the cab, even after a fresh oil change.

Its the Blow-By bottle located on the front of the motor. while your motor is running there is air comming out of the blow-by tube which is connected to the blow-by bottle which traps any oil that may make its way out the tube. your smelling the fumes from this breather hose and bottle. when you stop at lights the engine fan will blow the fumes back to the windshield where they enter the cab ventilation system. hence the smell.

I eliminated that smell by removing the bottle and replacing the tube with approx. 10' of 3/4" clear tubing. running it from where it connects on the front of the motor, past the steering box and along the frame to a point where it points down behind the drivers seat.

I love this sight, thanks much! Gonna re route it tomorrow.

Be careful on how long you make that hose for the re-route if you live in the cold climates. The clear hose is a great idea. I just shortened mine as there was a concern over freeze up within the tube. If that tube gets plugged, your engine won't be happy !!!
You can help this by keeping a downward flow on the hose, but I'd keep it short if I lived in Bozeman, MT.

Good point, maybe just routing towards the back side of the motor near the front dif vent line would be a better idea. It gets D*MN cold here!

I just extended my blowby tube about 8" by slipping a larger hose over it,no clamp,no bottle on the 12 valves. The tube end is about 6" off the ground, oil doesn't paint the bottom of the truck,it hits the road instead. Still get the oil smell after changing, but only after shutting down and getting out, this is normal.

I found that my exhaust clamp was loose at the turbo and the heating/colling system was pulling it in. might check those bolts while your under there, extending the breather bottle.

this was on the stock exhaust, not the new one.

Most diesel engine oil has a break in period
of some sort in were it will give off a strong smell for a couple hundred miles.
That asprin bottle on the front of the engine, by the fan doesn't help much either.

That relocation kit from Geneo's helps alot,
but you can still smell it a little. (My breather bottle is located in front of the left front tire... . )

Does anybody recall seeing the drain the aspirin bottle at every oil change notice? I saw it a while ago, thought it was in the service manual, but now I can't find it anywhere.

Thinking Geno's relo kit looks pretty good. Moroso has some nice remote blowby bottles too. Some even have a petcock on the bottom for easy draining.

Todd;

I have a little over 20k on mine now. I check the bottle each oil change . . but never seems to be enough to warrant the inspection each change.

On my last 2 changes . . no more than a 1/8" accumilation on 5k miles. I think that once I get around to the relocation then I'll check / empty every other change . . or more.

2001 3500 HO with all the yada yada yada.....

i emailed geno's garage today because the blow-by relocation kit is not listed anymore. they emailed me back and said due to folks not properly installing, i. e. , kinking hoses, the buildup of pressure was causing problems so they took it off their accessory list. anyway, the email included instructions on how to construct my own using one of their techs design. included parts list too. they may be distributing the instructions on request.

Well that is a revolting development, about the Geno's Kit.
I would go through some Hi-Po catalogs, like Summit Racing. I am sure they have some universal kits for race engines that would work on your truck.

Note: you do have to be very careful with the hose routing, and double check it a couple of times after install to prevent kinks or chafing... .

This is always an option too. #ad
