oil smell on 04.5

I did my first oil change at 3k miles and had not noticed any problems or smells. After I changed oil (used shell rotella T 15-40) I noticed a really bad oil smell when sitting at traffic lights or when truck warms up. I have no oil leaks and all fluids are full, I have put 900 miles on this oil change and still have this smell and its driving me crazy!!! If you have any ideas feel free to call me (740)703-8499. I took my truck to the local dodge dealer and they couldn't find any problems, so I really have no idea whats going on because there is no oil leak. I have noticed that the smell is very stong on the drivers side by the front wheel, and that didn't make much sense to me because all the heat is on the passenger side by the manifold. Any help would be great.

Thanks, Jason Wiseman

There is a whole thread on this. Just put it in the search engine. It has to do with where the breather is located. It does go away after a few hundred miles.

It is the breather and that Rotella is one of the stronger smelling oils till it gets some miles on it. I used it for the first change but could not stand the smell, switched to Delo 400, very little smell if any for the first 500 miles.

Is it likely that poor fitting rear engine compartment seals allow engine fumes io pass into the cowl vent intake? Possibly more noticeable stopped or at low speed because outside airflow is low then?

I just changed my oil around 800 miles ago using the Delo 400, noticed a slight smell for maybe a day if that long after changing. Never have used the Rotella T in any thing before. Lot of people at work with diesel trucks use Rotella, along with the Delo 400 users.

When my truck was new I seemed to notice a oil smell more often, could have been the coating thats on the manifold though.

Installed the missing rubber flap and taped up the other hole Dan speaks of today. It did seem to help but I haven't really had the chance to test yet. I'll know the first time I'm at a stop light with the air/heater running.

Question: The big hole you reach into in order to install the missing flap is taped on the passenger side so I went ahead and taped it up on the driver's side before re-installing the cowl cover. Afterwards, I ran my wiper to ensure everything still worked ok and all of the sudden I was wondering where the water is going to go since I taped up the hole. Is there another source for the water to drain or did I screw up? From the pictures Dan took, it looks as if there is at least one other hole for water to drain. Thoughts?

being the curios type and having the blow-by experience occasionally I checked my 04. 5, it dona looka anything lika your 03 but there are cutouts in the cowling, I thinka thesa may be the fresha air intakes from the cowl vent, if so then you may be blocking the fresha air inna the cab, I guess to check that you could close all the doors and set the controls for fresh air then spray somthing into the cowl vent with the fan running??

I've been using Rotella and always had the smell. I guess I'm weird, because I like it. Just switched to Delvac and now the smell is gone. Oh well.

A friend of mine called me one day and said I changed oil and now have this BAD smell. Said his 10 year old said WHATS THAT STINK DADDY! Took his about 500 miles to clear up. For info purposes I just changed to Amsoil 15w40 full syn. It STANK also for about 300 miles. I used it in my last Dodge diesel and never noticed it before.

The Delvac oil produces almost no smell. Don't know why, but if the quality is comparable to Tella and Chevro, I will be using it. I do like not having the EGR though

Mine had the "smell" everyday for the first 20K then i switched to the Red Line synthetic and no more smell . I did notice the dealer sells an oil additive the scents the oil to a lemon smell. I havent heard of anyone using it though.

The AMSOIL 15w40 smelled for a few hundered miles. Additive package. Never heard of additive package lasting longer then a few hundered miles!
