Recently changed the oil for the first time in this new truck (to me). Put in Delo 400. Don't know what was in there before but had receipt for 15/40 HD diesel from an RV place that the previous owner went to. Anyway I now get an aroma from the breather tube that smells like that fresh Delo 400, as if I was taking a whiff from the new jug. This is evident when the truck is well warmed up. Don't seem to be using much if any oil, maybe 1/4 of the space in the safe zone on dipstick over the first 3,600 miles that I've had the truck. Don't drip on the driveway either though there is a wet film on the tube.
Any ideas?
Thanks for listening.

don't you love that smell?--mine lasts around 3 weeks then disappears,no leaks on the driveway is good.

I just changed the oil and my truck and it has the wonderful smell of Shell Rotella floating around it. Guess it could be worse and smell like burnt oil coming out of a Power Choke.

You guys crack me up! I just love the smell of that high-dollar Amsoil 15w-40! I'm with Case500D, oil-burnin' Powerchokes aren't anything to brag about. Those Ford guys, don't you just love passing them, especially going uphill!

Yep, Mine does the same thing. I use Delo 400 also. I think that there must be some kind of solvent that takes alittle time to distill off the fresh oil.
Yes I do love having a truck that doesn't leak any oil.
My powerstroke at work uses about two quarts of oil in 3000 miles, how ever it does idle for several hours at a time as it has a pump hoist mounted on it. Mark

If the smell bothers you, try Mobil Delvac. It does not seem to have as much odor. It seems that my truck instantly pulls the smell from the draft tube and into the cab via the vent when it is sitting. I quit using Rotella for this reason.

Ahh! Well that's a relief. I don't mind the aroma at all just wanted to know if it was normal. Just how good does that Amsoil smell anyway? I'm under the impression that at 112K it might be a little late to start using synthetics. I guess this could open a Pandora's box of opinions/repeats.
My old Ford 6. 9 used/burned/leaked a quart every 400 to 500 miles for the 3 1/2 years I had it and still does. Some of the guys I bantered with on the Ford site said theirs did that from day one. That old truck treated me well but I have sure found a new level of confidence. The 6. 9 section of the Ford site seems to have a paranoia du jour. I got tired of living like that. I guess worrying about this oil smell was a little of that leftover chronic fear. Though my truck does have an auto and I just bought some Lucas injectors... ... ... .

Hey NOMOFO, that Amsoil smells like the sweetest flower that you have ever smelled! Just Kidding!, but I think that it smells good enough to fill your coffee cup with!
Sounds like you and I are on the same track, I just sent for some 'Ol Blue Specials myself today. I finally made up my mind, on which ones, and when I was finally going to purchase my injectors. I can hardly wait!
Oh, by the way, my truck had 130,000 miles when I bought it and switched to Amsoil. Doesn't leak or burn a drop. (Except for and occasional vent tube drop)
